Yup, those wonderful church goers are going to be in my neck of the woods next week (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Richmond). They're actually protesting at the holocaust museum in Richmond. WTF?

What pisses me off even more than their idiocy is the fact that our local news stations are shitting themselves preparing for this so that they all get a break from talking about the dark-skinned gang members killing each other in Norfolk. The fact that these people get press infuriates me. I know, I know. I am talking about them here and doing the same, but I am just venting.

Anyway, I want to send notes to the new stations suggesting that they ignore this group and not give them any attention.

The Westboro Baptist Church makes multiple visits to the Cornhusker State each year. They've been here for the funeral of a gay friendly Minister, several soldiers who died in Iraq and to protest near Memorial Stadium during a Football game.
I think they still get blurbs in the newspaper, but I don't recall seeing much local news coverage. The Patriot Guard Riders usually do a quality job of keeping them at bay when it comes to military funerals.
The last time they were here, they were less than a few blocks from my apartment. I didn't bother to go see what Fred Phelps actually looks like up close.

When I was either 11 or 12 they came and protested my church because there were open gays in it. I was kinda excited about it at the time because I thought that they were going to be doing crazy protest stuff, which is a lot more interesting then sitting through a sermon. I was disappointed, just some people with signs and not the crazy wrath of god stuff I had anticipated.

they're also protesting outside of a Jewish school and synagogues in Norfolk this same week. Apparently he hates the Jews as much as he hates fags. haha.

The weird thing is: their schedule on their website has them at a bunch of places throughout the day for like 30 minutes a location. Doesn't seem very effective.

That's actually a pretty brilliant suggestion for counter-protestors. Stations are going to be there regardless, so let them spend their time showing streakers instead of covering Phelps's boring, predictable, hate soundbites.

I don't know how the authorities like to handle Fred Phelps when he comes to protest in other cities, but the ones around here generally prefer to cordon off and quarantine his protest zone. They have done the same thing for the Aryan Brotherhood or KKK. They don't allow them to march and usually keep the counter protesters far enough away that they can barely hear each other shouting.
It might restrain free speech, but we never had a major incidence or melee.

Being a Kansan, let me tell you how WE handle those cock-gobbling fuck stains... We ignore them. Our local and regional media ignores them on a regular basis. That is partially why they spend more time outside the region these days, they get the press coverage elsewhere. Local cops cordon off their protest zone, local angry mobs show up to yell at them, and the day goes on - with no media presence. Sure, its fun to get into arguments with them as you stand in line to see Nine Inch Nails, or a local play, but in the end most locals get it - laugh at them, ignore them, and they go away.

The miracle of free speech. As much as I think these guys are the scum of the earth I do believe that the silver lining is that they do truly show that in America you really can say what ever the fuck you want. I think that's a good thing.
