It's fine when she's immobile, fine enough anyway. It's funny - we don't wish for more space to put our shit, or her shit, not in the slightest... having a tiny place forces you to have discipline about what you take into the house, because there's not much room for anything new. One in, one out. What I do miss is space for segregation when she's fussy. I wanna take her somewhere she can work out whatever she's fussing about and let my wife sleep. Right now that's the front lobby, or the grocery store.

But we've already got designs on the guy downstairs's place. His unit is 1.5x bigger than ours, and he rents, and he's out this august. Wife's already contacted him, our landlord, and his landlord, and is workin' the mojo.

The Rick.

"Why?"

1. Less common, visually.

2. Less common, sound-wise.

3. Great all-arounder. Won't scare people like an SG or a Paul, but it can be pushed to respectable distortion levels if you plug it into the right stuff.

4. It's not a Gibson. I'm not super-down on them these days, but they are incredibly over-priced for the quality you get, in my opinion. Mahogany is too soft a wood for that headstock angle, and sure enough, lots of them break. And the pickups, you can put those in ANYTHING and it will sound like an SG. The neck feels ok but not amazing, and the body/neck weight ratio isn't right, they're very neck-heavy. Pick one up and see if you don't notice it. They don't have a trick... something they can do that no other guitar can mimic well. Strats, tele's, and Ricks all have that trick - I know one when I hear one. But an SG just sounds like any other 2-humbucker solid-body electric. And the neck is glued... if / when it fucks up, you don't have any easy / cheap options, you're going to a luthier. On a fender you could bolt on a replacement inside 30 minutes, re-stringing included.

So the only thing they have going for them is when you just WANT one, like you sorta do. The only thing it can do is make you doughey-eyed when you look at it, and that's worth something. But is it worth $1400 (or whatever gibson wants for a slab-bodied glued neck electric that you and I could make in 2 weekends?)

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to issues of space and kids. I have them all. Just wait until she gets more into playing with toys.

And while I've never even played a guitar before in my life, I want a Gretsch Falcon.

FWIW, I'm down on both Rick and Gibson for basically discontinuing production of lefty models. Go fuck yourselves on your overpriced guitars ya schmucks.

Derris, get one of these Jack White guitars or other weird shit they sell and start being cool for once:

This one is great just for being the most over the top guitar that I would actually play...

So I've just joined a band on bass, even though I've alway been primarily a guitarist. It's been interesting, I have a hard time with it some times, no with playing the bass, but with wanting to grab the guitar from the guitarist and show her what I think she should be doing. But anyways my cheap yamaha bass that I bought for fucking around isn't cutting it so I'm looking to get a new one. I've always really liked the way fretless basses feel, does anyone know of any cheap ones that are any good. My budget tops out at around $400.

Don't buy a fretless.

Sell your yamaha and pair it with the $400 and look for a hofner CT series (club or violin) and string it with flats.

You can find them used on Ebay in your price range. Shit, they're only 760ish new.

Fretlesses are worthless unless you play upright or electric upright. They just don't sound or feel right, and it takes alot for the average joe to make shit sound in tune.

Unless you've got a jonesing to sound like Jaco (blech) or Bakithi Kumalo (rad), it's just a phase that you will pass through.

Get a bass you never want to get rid of. If you still want a fretless, save up another $500 and get an upright off ebay.

and Derris... Ric.

Or something with a P-90. Like an SG with P-90s (not the new p-100s or whatever they're called).

That, my friend, is a rock and roll machine.

Ric, every day of the week.

I fucking hate SGs. Always have. For no real reason, other than a). I think they look like shit, and b). nearly everyone I know who plays one is a dick in some lame metalcore band.

Having never played one, I broke a string on my tele at practice a couple of weeks ago and subbed in my guitarists' 'spare' guitar, an SG.

I just could not get into it, at all.

You could say picking up someone else's guitar you've never played before mid-practice isn't an ideal first date, but i've done it with so many other guitars over the years that have just sounded and felt "right" straight off the bat.

All I can say is, I can now pin some rationale onto my lifelong hatred of the damn things.

Oh, and did I mention they look like shit?

(and Rics look fucking awesome...)

He could just put P-90's in his Telecaster Thinline.

Are those both short scale? I'd definitely go spend some time with some short scale basses before you make that switch as they aren't for everybody, but then again if he's primarily a geetar player he may like it better.

I was thinking that Curtis Novak or someone was doing a straight drop in replacement but now that I look, it's his Jazzmaster p'ups I was thinking of.

Also for the record, I agree with Philly about the P-90's. I fucking love the sound of those pickups, and I'm embarassed that I don't have anything with them in it.

I'd take the SG.
I've just never been a fan of the feel of the Ricks. Okay, maybe for strictly rhythm, they play well, but for leads, they're just too stiff in my hands. Not enough guts and not enough of that silky feel that lets me play my best. (And I need all the help that I can get!)
So, sign me up with the minority (again).

FWIW, I asked the question because I've been squirreling away some money here and there to get an affordable hollow body or semi-hollow body guitar. I've had my eye on the Epiphone Casino or the Sheraton.

But, I've had enough to get one of those for a while now and now that I do I'm thinking I might just keep saving and get something more substantial.

I've always like both the Rick and the SG. I've never played either one of them. The reasons are strictly sound based and cool-factor based.

I've always liked that jangle-pop sound that the Rick can achieve and growing up in Georgia, there was no one cooler to me than 80's Peter Buck, who of course built a career on that guitar.

But, I think my favorite sound ever in rock is probably an SG through a Marshall, ie the Angus Young.

I have no issue with the SG looks. Both are rock icons in my eyes. Just getting others thoughts on them.

Like I've previously mentioned, I've never played a guitar in my life. Never owned one. Honestly, I couldn't even tell you the difference of any of the guitars mentioned in this entire thread. Yet, I've read every word of these 8 pages and it's one of my favorite threads.
