I've always been curious about the RE20 myself. I know that it's used a lot in the radio and voice over worlds but have no real insight on it for rock vocals and instruments.

We use either an MXL or Rode NT1 large diaphragm, but will just as often plug in something lesser to get a sound. We've got a smorgasbord of Shure, Sennheiser, some of those rad Oktava small diameter jobbie's as well.

the re20 wouldnt be for vocals but for voice- recording ... stimuli actually for psychoacoustic stuff- pretty flat freq response up and down

I dont know what ppl look for in vocal mics.

and Ive killed more time here than I will admit- http://www.coutant.org/contents.html

Oh ok, well then it's a great choice. There's a Shure that's on that same broadcast level quality but I can't remember which model number

For processing, a lot of people love the dbx 286 as the most "bang for your buck" for radio and voice stuff.

Shure SM-7 is a standard radio broadcast mic.

Blue just released a usb mic that's got some kind of THX endorsement for $150.

Is this for your research?

That's the pretext at least:)

The main concern is a flat frequency response - the 57 doesn't really accomplish that (although I might pick one up just the same).

USB mics are generally problematic given the convenience vs. quality factor.

Yeah, I would never buy a usb mic, but blue makes a good condenser, and I saw the review from the namm show and thought it was interesting.

my arsenal:

SM57
Samson Condenser
MXL
old-timey bullet-style dispatch mic

other than a high noise floor that i have to EQ out, the dispatch mic is amazing on vocals. i used it on my TRASH ep.

I have an AT2020 at home that I use for vocals when recording (not the USB version).

A great vocal condenser for the price (under $200). Suits my voice really well, so it may just be that I got lucky and this microphone's particulars work well for my voice frequency.

You can hear it in action on the track "Our Old Rooms", if you want a demo:
