Harpoon- Leviathan
Image

Got a 4-pack of this to try out Harpoon's uppity offering series. I didn't expect much, but this beat my expectations. It wasn't amazing, but it was perfectly good. Lotsa hops and alcohol, decent malt underneath it. Good for them. Then I had people over to watch Lost, and one guy went straight for these, and sandbagged the last one. Grr.

One for Tanner...
St Bernardus - Pater 6

This is a lighter offering from these guys, at 6.7% I think. It went down like candy at first, it's really mild and almost buttery. But it's also an amber, and I'm starting to think all belgian ambers tend towards the coppery / acidic end of the scale. But the end of the bottle I was ready for a big glass of water. Good, but not as good as the last one I had.

Lazy Magnolia - Gulf Porter

I've had several of Lazy Magnolia's offerings and I haven't liked one yet. However, the cool bottle enticed me, and this one was surprisingly decent. Far from great though. It was sort of light for a porter but it packed a decent amount of flavor akin to a deep brown ale. I kept expecting a flavor in the finish that never came. My drinking partner tasted a lot of chocolate notes, but I didn't

Expedition Stout - maybe the thinnest head I've ever poured, but huge taste. Almost too much alcohol (10.5%) & probably wouldn't drink more than one, but lots o'coffee and dark chocolate flavor. Tasty, to say the least. Really hit the spot after a long day in trade show hell.

Had this last weekend at a restaurant. Poured like motor oil. It was good but having it at dinner with another couple before we ate just wasn't the right time to drink it I don't think. Just way to heavy for the moment. I'd probably drink it again but on a cold night by myself watching American Gladiators or something.

The alcohol content was pretty steep too and didn't quite go with the cheese plates we ordered to start the dinner.

In conclusion, solid beer that I ordered at the wrong time.

This beer is amazingly good. It's 8.5%, yet really smooth and incredibly tasty for a Brown Ale.

Wierd... I wonder how ale yeast handle the peanut starches / what-have-yous. So it tastes like stout and peanuts?

Yours didn't sour? Many of the Uber Goober, Cup A Joe and PB&Js have soured in the bottle due to some odd things happening to the peanuts. If they do sour on you, just send Short's an email and they'll refund you the cost of the bottles.

The Cup A Joe and PB&J we're amazing fresh.

That's what I would expect, actually - those ale yeast cannot process all the fuel from peanuts and other odd shit, so it's still gonna be in the bottle (it's what makes it taste different), but without a high enough alcohol content to keep them at bay, the bacteria in there would go apeshit on those proteins and mutliply to Skunky levels.

They rule.

I had a Bell's Sweet Potato Stout on draft the other night -- that shit was TIGHT. It was super smooth and a little sweet, and I could probably have had 14 or so if I had been inclined.

Speaking of sweet/chewy alcoholic german beers,

Avery - The Kaiser Imperial Oktoberfest

This was killer. I wish it hadn't been almost 10% booze, that's almost too much, but damnation I enjoyed it. It was sweet, mellow, utterly german tasting, almost a bock but not quite roasted enough. Figured I'd better try it before they go bad.

A couple of friends of mine took a road trip to VA this past week, because my friend Jessica is applying to Graduate Schools to get her Doctorate in Music. She's currently an instructor at Nebraska Wesleyan, Doane College and has played Clarinet with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra.

Anyway I advised another of our friends about the various beers available to him in the East Coast, and he brought be back this:

Magic Hat 9

I was pretty excited. You can get neither in Nebraska currently and am looking forward to drinking them tomorrow.

Neither of those should live up to your expectations, Prom.

Hey now, don't be ragging on Yuengling- it's still my go-to when I just want to get my drank on in industrial quantities. Magic Hat 9- rag away.

Tuengling's ok, exactly as you describe it. I hope that's what he's expecting. Magic Hat... failsauce.

You're probably right, but my expectations with most beers are rather low. I only get pissed when I have to deal with a bunch of people describing it as the "nectar of the gods" and then I find out it taste average or even worse like absolute shit.
I also have heard that the Yuengling quality has dropped since it went Southward and enjoyed Iron City when I had it, so Magic Hat doesn't have much to lose.

Also I should mention that I had Yuengling Porter and possibly Yuengling Premium when I went to Hershey/Harrisburg in the summer of 2002.
