My 10 year old son wants me to take him to see Pearl Jam. I was planning on getting tix as I've never seen them, and PJ/Band of Horses at MSG on my birthday is too good to pass up. But going with friends, not kiddies.

Anyway, I was 13 when I went to my first concert (Styx - so shoot me. The Kinks were next). You think 10 is too young for a Pearl Jam show? Normally I'd say maybe, but he's way into music already.

I lived in rural Georgia where there was no live music infrastructure, so I was 15 when I saw my first show and I've been making up for it ever since. I remember wanting to go see The Fat Boys in College Park, GA when I was young. Fellow Georgians will recognize how stupid that was.

Also wanted to skip school to go see the 1st annual Lollapalooza in Atlanta, but my parents said I couldn't miss school. Pretty sure that ratcheted up my hate for them.

The 1st Lolla was during summer when school was out, Stu. Maybe you are thinking of the second year when they came back through a second time after school was in.

I think I was 14 or 15 and the show was Front 242 with Frontline Assembly opening. Industrial, yo!

16 when I went to see U2 at the big auditorium – Joshua Tree tour.
A year later I went to my first small, club show – Meat Puppets at Metro, Chicago. Touring for Mirage.

Probably 10 or 11. It was either John Denver or Barry Manilow.

I remember that fact only, but literally nothing of the actual event. What/ Where/ Why/ How?

I saw a ton of State Fair gigs with parents when I was really young, and went to a concert with my oldest sister at like 13.
The first show I went to sans any family was 17, I saw White Zombie and Prong.

I was 8 or 9 when my dad took me to see the Beach Boys, and 11 when I saw The Kinks with my aunt.

It kind of depends on the setting (venue, type of crowd expected, etc.), but I'd probably take my 10 year old to a show if he showed any interest.

Around 13, Chas & Dave at the Windmill club in Rushden. I won a rather large tobrelone in the club raffle afterwards.

17 - Jimmy Buffett at Lakewood. The year before, my mommy wouldn't let me go see The Grateful Dead.

I was either 14 or 15, I saw the Rolling Stones at Soldier Field with my ma. I wasn't too into them at the time, but they've always been my mom's favorite band. I had a blast other than this overweight middle-aged woman who was smoking pot and bumping into me with her dancing the whole night. Can't take my mom anywhere.

first show? new kids on the block with my mom and sisters. I was six.

first real all by myself show? 16 - nofx. bloody nose from the pit. i came home with a bloody shirt.. my mom was not impressed. I had to sneak out for the following four months because my mother did not want me to go to see bands anymore. ha!

i agree with stone. as long as he is safe, i would take my kid to see a show they really wanted to see.

Older brother took me to see Rush when I was like 14-ish. What a waste of $30. I ended up going with him to see them and Metallica a couple more times, pretty much because there isn't much to do besides visit the mall if you don't have a drivers license.

July 27, 1991. MC Hammer. I was 12 years old. After the concert there was a riot, which according to the article pasted below, ranks #5 in Canadas top 10 worst riots. Needless to say, I went home after the show and was probably playing super nintendo while the rest of the concert go'ers were destroying my town.

Quote:
While the cops shouted “u can’t touch this,” 2000 looted and pillaged in the BC resort community of Penticton. Windows were smashed, a department store was robbed, and a mob of thirsty rioters broke into a liquor store while the pigs lobbed tear gas in an attempt to quell the violence. The riot apparently broke out after 20 teenaged misfits, hyped up on Hammer, began chucking rocks at a traffic cop. The tally: over 50 arrests, 60 injuries, and one shamed, pathetic rapper in an oversized, purple jumpsuit.

When I was in High School I used to go to local hardcore shows because I had friends in some of the bands and they were usually free or really cheap, plus there weren't many all ages shows nearby. The first concert that I went to other than a local band was Brand New when I was 19.

Not sure about first show with my folks, dad took me to see a couple things when I was pretty young.

First show on my own, with a joint and all...12, Blue Oyster Cult.

If you're with the kid, I'm sure everything will be fine and you'll have a great memory to look back on.
