In the fall of 2008, Damien Jurado began a side project, with his younger brother Drake, to run opposite to, yet borrow from, the folk music leanings that he is known for. He wanted to add a dark early 60's garage feel to the songs. Infusing this sound came easily with the addition of his younger brother. With no musical experience other than high school choir (and being mistaken for Damien on the phone) Drake took naturally to drawing out the dark tales from the city where he was born. The songs are compelling in story, but also pay tribute in feel to the real town of Hoquiam. Gothic folk, personal narratives, and simple strong percussive elements define the music of Hoquiam. Sparse, desolate, and a place you will find yourself passing through from time to time - both the town and the band.

Yeah, there is no '60s garage feel whatsoever, unless he's referring to just him a guitar, minimal percussion, and some woo hoos.

^really fun. quite a bit different from last year's release. but for those who listened to it and wanted more "songs" and less "ambient shit" then you might be happy.

Getting this from Bolachas. The show itself is from 2001. I am pretty interested.

The last real live show that Jeff Mangum preformed Neutal Milk Hotel songs; the live quality is amazing… Oh to have been there…There’s really no point in me rambling on about how great “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea” is, everyone with ears agrees that its great. The Silver Jews lyric “All my favourite singers couldn’t sing” has never been more true than in the case of Jeff Mangum, in a way at least. His voice is awesome but he wouldn’t get through the first round of Pop Idol that’s for sure. He does some awesome wailing on this recording! This is the LAST EVER Neutral Milk Hotel gig, it’s not the full band it’s mainly just Jeff with a bit from Laura Carter. The gig was advertised as “World of Wild Beards Incorporated” but is all NMH songs and a John Lennon cover. ~ boxingduck

Hamid Drake & Bindu - Reggaeology

Image

Quote:
For the first two minutes of atmospheric discourse between the twin trombones of Jeb Bishop and Jeff Albert, and the human beatbox that is Napoléon Maddox, you would be forgiven for thinking that Hamid Drake's Reggaeology was an ironically titled free improv set. But that impression doesn't last. Infectious riddims kick in, based on Bob Marley's "One Drop," and from that point on it's a joyous ride.

As the third disc from the drummer's leadership vehicle, Bindu, Reggaeology continues the template set by its predecessors only inasmuch as it is completely different to what went before. Their eponymous debut featured four saxophones, stoked by the leader's drums, while Blissful (RogueArt 2008) was predicated upon spontaneously generated string and percussion grooves, and devotional declamations. This time out, while the recitations—by either Maddox or Drake—remain, they are slung from reggae beats with a two-'bone horn section. Also gathered under the Bindu umbrella are fellow Windy City fixtures Jeff Parker on guitar and Josh Abrams on bass and guimbri.

To oversimplify, the 68-minute program alternates overtly reggae-based pieces with other world-based rhythm outings, all spiced with pockets of improvised colloquy and timbral exploration. Given Drake's extensive reggae back story, it's no surprise that the riddims carry conviction. Both trombonists stretch the horn section vernacular with expressive soloing and relaxed conversation, without the need to draw on avant technique to make their mark. Parker nails the off-beats, but still gets to step out, with guitar hero calisthenics, on the standout opener, "Kali's Children No Cry." Elsewhere he's more restrained, while Abrams gets right down to the roots. Maddox is the wildcard, whether plying a litany of shushes, clicks and pops, crooning sweetly, or intoning spiritual texts.

"Togetherness" spotlights Maddox simulating scratching and dub technology, a trick cleverly echoed by the syncopated trombones, while Drake's bass and drum "Take Us Home" benefits from the real thing. Reprised from the band's debut, "Meeting and Parting" is given a choppy, reggae makeover, features amiably duetting trombones. A half-spoken Maddox lyric—which, like a few of the vocals, holds up less well over repeated listens than the accompaniment—is one of the few misfires on this successful genre-busting mash-up.

Track listing: Kali's Children No Cry; Hymn of Solidarity; Kali Dub; The Taste of Radha's Love; Togetherness; Meeting and Parting; Take Us Home.

Personnel: Hamid Drake: drums, frame drum, tabla, voice; Napoléon Maddox: voice, beatbox; Jeff Parker: guitar; Jeff Albert: trombone, Hammond organ; Jeb Bishop: trombone; Josh Abrams: double bass, guimbri.

Rangers - Suburban Tours - 2010

Another unfathomably great transmission from the mighty Olde English Spelling Bee - compressing a world of hazy 1980's pop edits and television broadcasts on one dense, oddly unsettling LP - so good. Rangers aka Joe Knight sits us in the passenger seat for another incredible cruise around the grey interzone of 1980's suburbia on this, his excellent debut LP release. 'Suburban Tours' was inspired by his move from the outskirts of his native Dallas, Texas, to a rainy San Francisco, where his loneliness grew into eleven tracks of pop-inspired, avant-smudged melancholia. The obvious comparison point is James Ferraro or Ariel Pink and their expressions of white American solitary poplife, but the tape editing processes and drained 80s funk of these tracks gives 'Suburban Tours' it's own autistic aura. Knight draws on the foggy memory of records by Steely Dan, Weather Report and Prefab Sprout, assembling a degraded sheen of 80s funk that's generally not found among many of his fellow Hypnagogic explorers. The uncomforting factor comes to light when his edits bunch into looped cul-de-sacs, like we're exploring the landscaped terrain of some gated community and the road/tape inexplicably folds into itself, we feel like we should be moving forward, wanting to get out of there, but we're were not getting anywhere. Perhaps this is his take on the stultifying nature of American middle-class suburban life? Or English, for that matter. Either way, the effect is oddly moving, blending the neon evening glow of an inner-city night drive with tones of a greyer, and more insipid suburban landscape. Limited copies - not to be missed.

If there is 1 electronic release you should listen to so far this year, it's this one for sure. Seriously fucking brilliant.

Scuba - Triangulation - 2010

Image

Scuba finds his bearings amidst the pillars of dubstep, garage, techno and electronica on his outstanding second album. The last two years since the release of the landmark 'A Mutual Antipathy' album have been something of a golden period for the head of the Hot Flush clan and resident at Berghain's Sub:stance event. With a probing curiosity and focussed remit, he's matched a clutch of previously incongruous dancing styles with a subtlety and class that's ensured respect from all corners of the club. 'Triangulation' guarantees that position with a superior set of future classics, connected thematically by impressive levels of electro-acoustic spatial technicality and divided only by an insistence on exploring multiple tempos and the freshest riddimic functions. 'On Deck' for example, is his nod to the burgeoning Afro-Funky house germ that's infecting everyone, executing kinky kick/snare syncopations with typically Scuba-styled reinforcements. Everything here just feels like it's been engineered to some highly exacting standards, the shuffle-tek garage engines of 'Three Sided Shape' and 'Glance' have been tuned to the nth degree, while dynamic synthlines open and unfurl with precise movements on 'Heavy Machinery' and the masterfully spacious mixing throughout proves that the devil has been well worked into the detail.
