Yeah, I think TWHMHW is pretty odd on this record, but would've been a nice addition to Dirty South. It also falls weird in the album. It's right after Drag The Lake Charlie, which has been one of the longest growers on the album for me. So, having those two next to each other has been a little tough to get through. Right now, Santa Fe is one of favorites on the record. I'm still mulling this over before I give a track-by-track review. Its gotten a lot of play though, so I'm in the camp who digs it.

Plus, I'm sure you all have heard that this is only part 1 of 2 planned releases this year, right?

Pointless record.

If someone sent me this without knowing anything about this band,
I would've tossed this disc after the first two tracks.

How many times can you write the same song ten years later?
...Literally the same god damn chord progressions, topical lyrics and structures over umpteen albums.

Then you have something that doesn't sound similar and it sounds like a B-side from some random college band from 1991 with ten times the production budget.

I'll just put the TDS on if I need to hear this band.

This entire disc is completely forgettable.

But!

If I knew I could repeatedly sell this shit,
I would...x10

READ: You don't really like this band

I mean, you are entitled to your opinion but I just can't see how anyone can listen to "Southern Rock Opera" and then this record and can't hear a band that is now much more accomplished and nuanced musically. They're working within a rock band format and IMO, have hit several styles, and have hit and missed but to just say it's the same song over and over is simply without merit. What do you want them to do? Get with the LCD Soundsystem and make a dance record?? This is also a phenomenon I've seen on the board in the past where we get comments like "there just nothing interesting anymore about band X anymore" when Band X just continues plugging along growing as an artist (last years example: Neko Case). If you want to move on to another band, more power to you, but, don't blame Band X for essentially putting out another album of quality material. This is the Quest For New syndrome (not saying that's what you're doing here Jerkass, just something I've seen with established bands around here).

I guess they no longer have any cache with the art school cognescenti. Oh well. I'm fine with them continuing to put out music that their fans like and keep being the road dogs that they are.

As for this record, I finally listened to it all the way through yesterday and I think it's a solid effort at first listen. Where it ranks among their albums remains to be seen but I can see some of these songs becoming staples of the the live show. Not surprisingly, at least to me, I love the Shonna songs and "This Fucking Job" may be channelling the zeitgeist of people hit by the Recession better than anything I've heard yet.

IMO

An average DBT record-which for me means better than 98% of the shit out there.

Not as good as either the new Lucero or Glossary records.

Patterson-Good songs, a few great ones, nothing painful like "You and Your Crystal Meth"

Cooley-Only 3 ?-Disappointing and "Eye Like Glue" is not one of his better slow songs, the other 2 are classics. Still my favorite songwriter.

Shonna-"(It's Gonna be)I Told You So" is very good--"You Got Another"--2 lines repeated endlessly does not a song make.

Love the guitar work, added empasis on keys and vocal harmonies.

In retrospect, "Righteous Path" does a great job of this as well.

Its been sorta kinda confirmed that later this year would be more songs coming out from this sesh. Means more Cooley tracks, and why this is so sparse. I'll believe it when I see it, because I couldn't see ATO putting out 2 records from a new signee in one year...but it is the Truckers who put out like 3.2 records a year, so we'll see. Add on to the fact that the highly kooky Cooley solo is coming on Record Store Day.

Yeah, the altered sequencing I got yesterday was something like:

Daddy
Santa Fe
Eyes Like Glue
Get Downtown
I Told You So
Drag The Lake
Wallendas
Birthday Boy
Wig
You Got Another
This Fucking Job
Fourth Night

It was during the recording of this record. Cooley was drunk in the studio, and Dave Barbe flipped the switch and recorded it. They're very odd, and DBT has been playing them over the PA before their shows.

So its a "Jamming With Edward" style fuck off that weirdos like us will venerate?

Righteous Path is definitely a good distillation of Blue Collar Honky Great Recession Blues -- but I also think it would work in almost any era as a "Getting Older and Coming to Grips with the Fact that Dreams Don't Come True, but You Can Still Make SOMETHING of Yourself" anthem. That songs speaks to me now like Get on the Plane did when I was 23.

Haha. My goal is to meet him sober. Everytime I meet him after a show he's lit up. We can just hope that he has a Keith Richards liver.

I haven't heard a lick of the new record yet, but I just needed to say that I went to a friend's work talent show tonight, and one of the acts covered "Perfect Timing." I'm pretty sure I was the only one in the room who knew the song. I shouted out a request for "Self-Destructive Zones" to no avail.

As far as the new DBT,it's a grower. It obviously falls somewhere between The Dirty South and A Blessing and a Curse.
I see Birthday Boy and The Flying Wallendas as the standouts. After the Scene Dies too.
I always end up liking the songs better once I see them live.

I'd like to hear the new Glossary - Dexateens and Glossary are having an FB prank war that is kinda fun to observe.

I always thought Glossary was the band with that Great Big Fat Chick Beth Ditto?

That Dex/Glossary war on FB is pretty funny.

I saw Glossary open for the Truckers a couple of years ago and they were terrible. Their drummer may have been one of the worst musicians I've ever seen on a stage and that's saying something. I guess they've gotten better?
