New single at the link:
Quote:
The Gaslight Anthem's third studio release is called American Slang and it will come out June 15th via SideOneDummy. The Springsteenian punk-rock foursome released the tracklist and cover art for the new album today via their MySpace and Facebook pages.

Produced by Ted Hutt (who produced the band’s promising second release, The '59 Sound), American Slang sees Brian Fallon (vocals/rhythm guitar), Alex Rosamilia (guitar), Ben Horowitz (drums) and Alex Levine (bass) delving further into their punk-inspired discussion of crumbling blue-collar ideals. Click over to one of those accounts above to get a taste of the new material. And expect to sing along.

The single doesn't sound too shabby at first blush. It begins with distant electric guitars and a small, but steady drum kit. Before long, it erupts into a stadium-ready anthem. Fallon belts out lyrics in his gritty, stentorian baritone about striving for an American Dream that's not really there: "They cut me to ribbons and taught me to drown / when it was over I woke up alone / you told me fortunes in American slang."

“American Slang is just what we do. That’s who we are,” Fallon recently told Paste. “You’re presented with this American Dream and all these American possibilities -- and then there’s the reality of what actually happens with your life.” While you listen, be sure to check out the very middle class New Jersey tracklist below.

American Slang

This one sounds like latter day Replacements to me. I'm sure that'll get me tarred and feathered by the Replacements aficionados, but that was the first thing that came to mind when hearing the first minute of "American Slang"

yeah I don't know that that's far off, stu. they're certainly going for that sing along, anthem thing that the mats did so well in their pop moments.

i found that on their last record, there were two songs that I LOVED and the rest i didn't ever need to hear again. If I get that from this record, I'll be happy. Not sure that this is one of those two songs.

I don't know if I hear latter-day Replacements myself, but vocally he's kind of reminding me of a heavier Killers circa Sam's Town and the guitar is also reminding me of a specific song but I'm totally blanking on it.

I'm curious about this one. The last one I took a while to warm to. Liked the title track immediately;y but took time to start enjoying the rest of it, which I eventually did.

Not sure this track is doing much for me, but still curious about the album.

Same for me, the last one fell flat at first for me but over time I got to really love it. Looking forward to hearing this one.

I'm a Mats fan, and I definitely hear this. This band still does nothing for me.

Didn't like this the first time through, but after the 2nd try I think it's alright. I can also hear the Replacements in spots but I don't think that's necessarily what they're driving after, it just happened that way. The Killers' "Sam's Town" doesn't seem far off either, and I like that record more than a lot of people.
This song certainly hasn't dampened my expectation for the new album but I'm almost guaranteed to be let down since "The '59 Sound" knocked me over from the very first measure.
Puts me in a weird place, I guess.

I haven't listened, but know this band through Chadwick. 59 Sound has some cringeworthy moments, but overall is so fucking catchy and infectious I couldn't help but fall in love with it.

Only SERIOUS music fans hated it: Radcliffe, Dalen, my brother.

I so wanted to hate that '59 sound album.
And now I have the album.
I still get bored with it when they start deep cuttin'.
But when it rocks, it suffices through cerebral familiarity.
It's still one of those records I don't feel comfortable listening to until I'm
drunk enough.

I get this. That, "deep cuttin" comment is truth in that I could not find better words to describe that chug. That was the one major turn off on that album for me, but I grew past it with a slight ugh shiver when I hear it. All in all the album is better than that crunch nod to "whatever genre" that freakin' ruins a pretty good r-n-r work out.

It's a slight step above Green Day.

I'll give it that.

No more.

I'm pretty sure if I listened to the Grateful Dead 24-7 then anything else would sound pretty awesome.

No, my point was quite the opposite - that I'm a casual music fan at best and can't stand this shit.

Got around to listening to this, and Sam's Town is the best RIYL. Didn't hear any Mats either.

Just finished previewing the American Slang. I'm not disappointed, it's a natural extension of '59 Sound not a retread but not too different either, 34 min long is a perfect length for it. if you like/hate that record, you likely won't change your opinion.
