Applying for a retail store managers position...

Asking me 'Salary Desired'.

I did the research and kind of got a ball park figure of what the position pays, but not really close enough for my area, to determine what I should put down...

How do you answer this? Can I price myself out of an interview from the start? At the same time, I don't want to ask for too little..That can backfire as well...

What's the safe answer? I have read so many different thoughts on the debate....Always willing to hear a few more...

Go high and add something like "but of course that's open to negotiation for the right situation".

Yeah, that's what I hear a lot...

I would rather ask a little on the higher end. I'm assuming that they expect people to ask on the higher end...But there is a fine line there, between higher end, and 'is this guy kidding us?'.

Yeah there is and to answer your earlier question, yes you might get disqualified for asking for too much money.

I'm in the process of hiring someone right now and let me tell you: folks is desperate.

Its been a long time since I've had to answer that question but I think I recall being advised to answer "Commensurate with the level of responsibilities and experience." The whole thing is basically a dodge to not answer but its at least arguable that you wouldn't have a complete understanding of the responsibilities at this stage even if you ought to have a handle on your experience and what you think that's worth.

I hate this question. I usually put the commensurate bit, which does feel like a dodge, but it's such a trap of a question.

I usually put a salary range (anywhere from 5-10K and then the commensurate with experience bit.

Usually the low end figure is somewhere in my mid-range of what I'd take. I think that answers their question loosely and puts the ball in their court.

Man, when I got hired at my last job I told them that I already had a job making the amount they offered me (I didn't) and they bumped it by 2K. I can't see myself, or a business doing that now.

Then again, if I had Doc Brown's Dolorean, I'd go back to 6 years ago and pay them 2K NOT to hire me.

if i can't avoid it, I usually start at what i make now for the bottom of the range and add on 20k or so to create the top of the range.

In this economy, you should probably just go out like Menace to Society and tell them "I'll suck yo dick!" to land this bugger.

Good luck dude.

no comment! :)

I'm now doing some things with one of their competitors in the U.S., called HorrorHound. Smaller circulation, but a better magazine overall. They have their finger more on the pulse....

And I am trying to get my foot in the door, with Rue Morgue which is the best horror mag on earth.

With all due respect I think this is one of the easier questions on an application form - you just put what you realistically think you are worth in the position you aim to be employed in.

Now for me things like 'References' and 'What did you do between 1992 and 1999' are the questions that bring me out in a cold sweat.

Good luck Dov.

Serious question - How many horror mags are there? 2 seems like too many.

There are probably about 7-8 out there, but only 3 that matter.

Fangoria - the granddaddy of em all. been around about 30+ years. fallen by the wayside in the last decade or so, due to poor management decisions, but still entertaining.

Rue Morgue - based out of Canada, which is like the GQ of horror mags. Brilliantly laid out, top notch writing, foucses on the horror culture in addition to movies, etc...

Horrorhound - newbie mag about 25 issues old based out of Ohio...Definitely an up-comer and seems to have taken the magic and spark that Fangoria use to have...A great informative, fun read each issue...
