Tarnation

I want to watch a movie tonight. What should I watch? I'm thinking either Vera Drake, The Machinist, or Tarnation.

Any thoughts?

I personally haven't seen it yet (aside from a trailer in the theater), but I would go see Vera Drake. Looks really intriguing!

Tarnation looks like a really difficult, fucked up movie from that poster.

You should watch the Machinist. Not that I've seen it.

Everything I've read and heard about Tarnation pretty much say that it may be the single best movie in the last few years......it is supposedly harrowingly personal and deals with the director's relationship with his mentally ill mother. John Cameron Mitchell(The guy who directed Hedwig and the Angry Inch) supposedly saw a rough cut of this movie and offered to produce it based on that....supposedly has a similar feel. I DEFINITELY want to see it, but need to be emotionally prepared to do so. I suggest you do the same.......then again, the other two movies(Vera Drake and The Machinist) look like they have a dark feel to them as well so it sounds like you may be up for it.....

In any event - Give us a review of the movie you end up seeing because they all look very good

I saw Vera Drake last weekend. It's a good film with good acting. Pretty depressing. As with a lot if not all of Mike Leigh's stuff, there are "class issues" at heart.

Did that picture change? Or is it supposed to be an ad?

I watched Tarnation last night and absolutely loved it. It's very depressing and the few times it's funny you don't wanna laugh cause it's seems inappropriate. I actually teared up a bit a couple of times since it is after all a true story. My friend and I walked out of the theater in a sort of dazed state as we were both blown away and sad as hell. Very surreal feeling. Also, the soundtrack was pretty good too. I definitely recommend it.

Jonathan Caouette is the Tarnation filmmaker. According to his blog, he purchased Le Tigre's This Island at Amoeba records. Poor thing. Hasn't he suffered enough?

Speaking of movies, when the hell is ANYTHING good coming to the theaters?

When does the movie industry crank back up? Besides the annual summer crapbusters.

Is Downfall out there yet? I don't know too much about it, but it appears to be some sort of Hitler biopic. Some rave reviews on this side of the pond.

OPA! is Tarnation the movie where the guy basically put together home movies from his entire childhood, and he was a sickly kid or something?

What else do I need to watch that Blockbuster'll have (looks like I'm in for a slow weekend in Mobile)

just in case anyone else wanted to see this movie i wanted to report that it was a terrible portrait of a narcissist and nothing more. his mom and his relationship with her is billed as the crux of the matter but is in the movie for about a third of it. the rest of the time is spent dramatizing how horrible his life was and how amazing it was for him to realize that he was fleeing what was apparently a pretty liberal texas highschool for the bright lights and glitter of new york. basically if every kid in drama in high school made a movie it would turn out like this. christ this sucked.
