Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - Before Today - 2010

Image

Ariel Pink and his band, Haunted Graffiti, have set a date for their first full-length release with the new label. Entitled Before Today, the 12-track collection is due out on June 8 in the usual CD, LP and digital formats. Check out the surreal cover art above.

Based on single “Round and Round,” which hit the internet a few weeks ago, Ariel Pink has abandoned his lo-fi roots in favour of a glossier, more full-bodied sound. A press release confirms that the album has “a high-production sheen; a contrast to the corroded bedroom recordings that have formed a fervent cult following over the past decade.”

The collection was partly recorded at House of Blues Studios in Encino with Sunny Levine (Scarlett Johansson and Pete Yorn) and Rik Pekkonen (Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Ringo Starr). Some tracking was also done in the band members’ home studios.

As for what we can expect stylistically, it is reportedly “a beguiling mix of glam rock, West Coast funk and Merseybeat harmonies.” That sounds like a pretty accurate description of “Round and Round,” which you can hear now over at 4AD’s website. The single will be released on seven-inch on April 26, backed by the track “Mistaken Wedding.”

Sounds interesting enough. Thanks Dale.

man, it's weird (not as weird as his previous material), and great. i love how he/they process the sounds. submerged, 70's am radio. sounding sooo good right now.

after hearing "Round And Round", i had high expectations. this far exceeded them. album of the year material.

Baths - Cerulean - 2010

Image

As Baths, Chatsworth, Calif.'s Will Wiesenfeld connects the dots between the sun-drenched haze of glo-fi torchbearers (Washed Out, Toro Y Moi) and the woozy beat math that lights the spliffs of Los Angeles' Brainfeeder collective (Flying Lotus, the Gaslamp Killer). Anticon recently signed him and will release his debut, Cerulean, on June 22.

that new mark sultan is refreshingly different. fuller band sound on a lot of it and some straying away from standard garage rock... but still has those killer vocals cutting right over everything. love it.

I'm intrigued by Plants & Animals - saw them open for Andrew Bird a couple years ago. Pretty ballsy to still record in analog - I had to crank their last album whenever playing it on my iPod.

I am really digging the guitars on La La Land. Multiple plays in the last few days and will continue to do so.

Pinehurst, have you tried MP3Gain to level your MP3 volume? It works great, and is completely reversible, as it just adds a tag to your files. Check it out:

Haven't been a fan of Malin's solo work, but here he's at least back with a band and sounding more like a softer D-Generation than a Ryan Adams wannabe.

Cool. Thanks Rads. Yeah, his solo work has been hit or miss at best, bordering on meh-ville. I'll give it a shot. Seems like with guys like him they sometimes need to abandon commercial success to put out something good.

Also, anyone heard anything about this:
