"Song for a Future Generation" by The B-52s just came up on shuffle, and it took me back to memories of my first car. I had a '74 Mercury Grand Marquis and the engine was just about the only thing that worked, so I toted around a crappy little jam box with cassettes of Whammy! and Cheap Trick's Next Position Please.

Good times...

my first car, a 1980 Oldsmobile Delta 88

I took a cassette boombox and wired it to cigarette lighter outlet to play tapes because I couldn't afford to have a cd/cassette player installed at the time.

I wore this tape out:

Later, while I was away, my Dad was warming it up in the driveway during the wintertime and inadvertently set the car on fire.

Mine was just like this, except it was brown and never got within 50 miles of a private jet...

I listened to the B-52's a fair amount in the car (in high school) too, but probably the first two albums moreso than Whammy!.

I mostly drove my mom's Escort around in those days, which had a suspect tape deck, so I didn't want to risk my "good" tapes in it. Instead of playing those, I wore out a some off-brand 90-minute tape that had this on one side:

Image
Soup is good food-(We don't need you any more)
You made a good meal-(We don't need you any more)
Now how do you feel-(We don't need you any more)
To be shit out our ass
And thrown in the cold like a piece of trash

and this on the other:

Image
Hold me
Close to your heart
Touch me
And give all your love to me

hahaha to that Dead Kennedys/Aha split tape

Bob, I remember those. They looked like a diplomat's car that doubled as a boat. Bet it got like 8 mpg.

and speaking of boats, one of the first cars I had here in Hawai'i was

A black '76 Chevy Monte Carlo. I got it for $900. Black vinyl bucket seats, no a/c. Burned your fucking ass in the summertime.

the tape deck started to play tapes in reverse for a while which was kind of cool

it didn't have a cassette player, but i did drive around with a boombox in the passenger seat playing one particular mix tape an aging punk-turned-hippie food prep guy i worked with gave me.

This was my first car, (largely) exclusive to my use. Tooled around in it, summer '99.

Only difference from the above: mine was a lighter shade of blue.

No tape-deck, though. Nor FM radio. Listened to lots of 1290AM WMCS (old soul & electrical folds).

That, and the others you listed, bring back a lot of memories for me too. I lip-synched part of "Technocracy" as part of a medley with some friends at our high school "talent" show. We won.

This is exactly what mine looked like. Had the worst speakers and no cd player. I hooked it up with one of those things that turns your ipod into a radio station. Fucker was great until a truck ran into it.

Chevy Colt?

I had The Freshcort aka a Ford Escort. Then got a Ford Ranger. I will NEVER buy another Ford.

'92 Pontiac Sunbird, acquired in fall '98. Mine was a 2 door that ran great and proved its structural integrity when I flipped it 3 times and hit a tree on the morning of Jan. 1 2000. Only injury was a deep cut on my head from a support strut that collapsed inward.

Anyway, I played this pretty much nonstop since the tape had no gap on either side.

First car I ever bought with my own money: 1972 Triumph GT6. Wasn't in as good a shape as the one pictured here, but exact same car. It was basically a go-cart with a 6 cylinder death rocket in it.

First car, bought in fall of '68- '65 Corvair Corsa- ran like a raped ape on the rare occasions when all 4 1 bbl carbs were synchronized. I put an underdash Lear Jet 4/8 track in it (which was promptly stolen), then an Automatic Radio 8 track in the glove box. During that era (fall '68 through maybe late summer '69), I would have been listening to:
