Speaking of eagles, is Freddie Couples just about the coolest dude to ever play anything or what?

how many times in your life have you played the game

Once. I can't afford clubs, dues, etc...

And Augusta itself is a life fail shit hole with a happy accident in the middle.

playing once isnt really going to do anything but frustrate you. i hated the taste of beer the first time i drank it but now its a pretty awesome thing. and dues? wtf. thats if you are a member somewhere.

you can easily get a set on ebay or craigslist that are decent and not expensive at all. arent you like scrooge mcduck down there with all of your publicity and shit?

Yeah, I mean, I'm probably about to join an actual Country Club, and still hate the very idea of golf.

I think it's my ingrained hatred of honkies.

that just doesnt make sense. the idea of golf? the point of putting a ball into a hole? what qualities of the game make you hate it? even the blacks play golf! and you and i both know the blacks are picky (they only smoke newports)

and you can get out on a decent course for 20-30 bones. its expensive if you go like 3-5 times a week, but i assume that like me, you dont have that time. just get some mid level clubs, take some lessons and get out there. you can smoke on the course!

Golf is the only sport you can play alone, or with a few friends, or compete against a large group. You can play golf without compromise with your kids or with your grandparents. A game of golf is as serious as you make it. There's a reason so many business and political deals are made on the golf course - people can't help but show their true selves.

I think GAR has bigger issues with honkeyhood than golf.

Which always makes me wonder how he tolerates living in a place like Montgomery, AL. Plenty of THEM, but outside of that all khaki short and Polo shirt wearing, living in a comfortable, conservative Christian, Southern Living whachoo know good bubble. I think what he hates is the country club culture from which golf arose more than anything. I can't say I blame him. It's the culture and who plays the game and what they stand for, not the actual GAME of golf.

Well that sounds like a perfect reason to hate playing the game

Also, because of the way we grew up, we have a natural hatred and distrust for blue blooded country club types.

BTW that Scrooge McDuck line was classic. Loller.

Right. And since there's no Old Money there to hate you gravitate to what IS there: golfers and airline pilots

Whatever.

There may be no better feeling than a perfectly struck golf shot.

Oh dude, I've come to love the game of golf (even if I don't have time to play much lately), and my experiences playing it have definitely changed my perceptions of who plays it; to wit, it's become a lot more of a working class sport.

what we're talking about is how we perceived the sport growing up. i mean, was your dad the kind of man who played golf when you were growing up?

Hell no. He was a country boy from Ellijay. The only sport that was appointment TV was UGA football. But, he also bought me my first set of clubs when I was in 8th grade. I guess I just never had any sort of perception of elitism with it. We had 3 public courses in Whitfield county and 2 private. I played both of the privates and certainly knew that you had to have money to be a part of them. I always just enjoyed being on the public courses with the quadruple bogey golfers.

I mean, I completely suck, and by the time I got to college it was more about just getting out there, drinking some cold ones, burning one way out on the course, and hanging out with friends. I want to play well but that's much less important.

I guess I just think Loog is selling himself short by holding on to some perceived stereotype about the sport. He can't be any worse than me if he took it up and it would also open up an opportunity for us to possibly start some annual boys trip along the Robert Trent Jones golf trail.

Also, once one gets to the country club level it just seems that it offers so much that Gar loves. Glad handing, rubbing elbows with the movers and shakers, and swilling liquor.
