I just don't understand how anyone can take them seriously.

Now I'm 100% certain The Hold Steady are the best band going.

No, you said they were terrible so I automatically tend to pay more attention. Like the Drones for instance. You thought it was the best thing ever, I listened and it was the worst fucking album I've ever heard. So yeah, you told me. You're my Anti-Radcliffe.

I like the National quite a bit, but the only thing spectacular about them is the drummer. I never would've given them a second listen if it weren't for that.

I'm going to pull out Alligator today. Haven't listened to it in over a year.

I'll report back. My current recollection of it was a few standouts and a few skippable tracks.

I will admit that it took me a while to get past (or really even be able to comprehend) the vocals, but once this band clicked for me, they did so in a big way. Dalen and Mick - I am sure that the suburban kid-turned-adult-trying-to-reconcile-his-Catholic-guilt-with-his-skatepark-and-drug-abuse-years subject matter is just a little too high minded. Maybe if they added a glockenspiel loop and sang in a made up language you'd like it better?

Derris - the key with Alligator to me was to get past the two obvious rockers - Mr. November and Abel and just enjoy it for what it is. I think Boxer is actually a better album for not even trying to rock.

I've heard three leaked songs from the new Hold Steady album, and they all seem to indicate this very well could be their best album yet.

The worst fucking album you've ever heard.

Hahaha.

You really don't have a clue about anything that isn't straight-down-the-middle rock & roll, do you?

Damn Bob, I remember reading that article and thinking it was cool however many years ago it came out. I had no idea it was you.

As far as the national goes, I've heard some of their stuff, but wasn't blown away. What song should I hear to change my mind?

I also prefer Boxer as a whole. "Mr. November" didn't click for me until I saw them live, but it's probably my favorite National track now.

Dale, that's a little self-righteous don't ya think? Remember when all you listened to was British bands? That was only 4 or 5 years ago.

I love how 90% of Obner thinks it's superior to 90% of Obner.

(Not saying I'm innocent of this or anything.)

I don't see how The Hold Steady can be put in any sort of Best catagory, they have one true classic, the first and second ones are decent enough, and the last one was a snore...they're good live but now they don't have the keyboard player with the handlebar moustache.

I'm totally guilty of this.

But it makes sense that we would all think this way. The reason obner is here is because we turned our noses up at mainstream music.

So what you're saying is that GAR is a reverse snob for joining a country club but not liking the culture around the game they were founded upon?
