ok, on first listen, i love the japandroids record way more than the broken social scene. going to listen a bunch more throughout the day. the bss record is maybe not super accessible on some tracks, but i think it will be a grower.

some tracks on the UNKLE record are strong, mostly depending on the vocalist. on first listen, those with mark lanegan, the chick from celebration, black angels, are keepers.

Anybody got a link on John Grant's "Queen of Denmark?" I'd appreciate a link if possible. Thanks in advance.

gracias, DJ!

allmusic Wrote:
Although co-founded by John Grant and Chris Pearson, the Czars were always Grant’s band, with most of the group’s acclaim stemming from his deep, resonant vocals and songwriting. The frontman reportedly butted heads with his four bandmates, but such creative tension helped mold the Czars into an eclectic group, and Grant’s voice -- despite being the cornerstone of every Czars album -- wouldn’t have shined as brightly without the dreamy, shoegazing music that flanked it. Queen of Denmark, his first release without the Czars, lacks that creative tension. Although recorded with Midlake (the band even shares billing in the album’s title), it feels more like a solo release, lacking both the cohesion of a proper lineup and the checks-and-balances system that Grant’s former bandmates provided. Left to his own devices, he unknowingly dilutes his strengths, whether he’s trading poetry for campy lyrics (“I wish I had the brain of a Tyrannosaurus Rex so I wouldn’t have to deal with all this crap”) or aiming for a contemporary version of ‘70s soft rock and coming up with mundane Americana instead. There’s no hiding the fact that Grant is a seriously talented vocalist, and the album’s best moments occur whenever he tones down the camp and, with a mix of Eddie Vedder’s baritone and Tim Buckley’s vibrato, reaches for the heartstrings instead. But with song titles like “Sigourney Weaver” and “Jesus Hates Faggots,” Queen of Denmark is more concerned with Grant’s cynicism.

Not really a great review, but I'm listening nonetheless. :)

Mynabirds What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood

Really liking this.

Quote:
"What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood" was recorded in the rugged hills of Oregon in the summer of 2009 with singer-songwriter/producer Richard Swift at the helm. Laura and Richard took turns at instruments until the record was fully orchestrated. When they finished recording each night, they'd polish off a bottle of whiskey and dance to records -- Dandy Livingstone, Buffy Sainte-Marie, James Brown -- until the sun came up. That energy really shows itself on The Mynabirds' debut album, particularly in "Let the Record Go" and "Numbers Don't Lie." Other songs, like "What We Gained in the Fire" and "Right Place," are more reflective, the lyrics following a Zen trajectory, echoing the sentiment of George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass."

The album features some notable guests. Besides Richard Swift's contributions on backing vocals and nearly every instrument imaginable, Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, O+S) and musician/engineer/producer AJ Mogis (Criteria, Monsters of Folk, Tilly and the Wall) lent their voices; Tom Hnatow (These United States) played pedal steel; and Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) arranged the horns that underscore The Mynabirds' tight, soul-soaked sound.

Having always wanted to make a record that sounded like Neil Young doing Motown, the discovery of the near mythical 60's R&B group, The Mynah Birds, featuring none other than Neil Young (and Rick James among others), seemed all too serendipitous. Thus, The Mynabirds found their namesake. The Mynabirds certainly summon that spirit, nodding to gospel and garage and making a sound all their own, with echoes of Dusty Springfield and Bobbie Gentry bleeding through the tape.

Holy Shit, Radcliffe recommends an album from my neck of the woods. They played a gig here right after SXSW. Dan McCarthy of McCarthy Trenching, etc. also plays with them. He's the dude who introduced me to this project before it transpired.

At first I was wondering how Rads got PooPoo on his ding dong. Then I read the description and downloaded. Listening right now - this is fucking GOOD.
