Looks like I'll be staying in Waukesha tomorrow night and Thursday night. Any bars/restaurants I should hit up? Possibly looking for a sports bar for Flyers/Devils tomorrow and maybe a beer bar Thursday. Any place for live music?

Waukesha isn't the mecha for...anything really. But there's a sports bar just an exit or so east on I-94 called Champs that'll have your game. Not the most "Wisconsin" sorts bar, but it's super close.

There's the usual acoustic-cover stuff going in downtown Waukesha at places like the Nice-Ash Cigar Bar. All the joints down there are super close.

If you're willing to venture into Milwaukee I'll have MUCH more to offer.

Would love to, but I'm not the one with the car. Plus, the Thurs/Fri meetings I have are kinda important & as the new guy I can't go outer limits in terms of partying. Hopefully next trip.

So, Milwaukee has some cool spots, huh? Was there for one night a coupla years ago...had a few drinks at the Safe House but that was it. Didn't even have time during the day to check out the architecture and the city in general.

Yeah I mean you're kind of SOL in terms of this trip. You can't polish a turd. And you my friend are staying out in the turds.

What Busty said, Waukesha has nothing to offer.

I do indeed live in Waukesha now (in an Extended Stay Hotel, but nevertheless). When I go out, it's usually to Milwaukee. To be honest, since I've been here (March 5), I have been spending most of my time after work looking at possible rental properties. And, I usually am traveling somewhere on the weekends (my family isn't moving up from Arkansas until after the school year), so I'm definitely not an expert yet. But, from what I've seen, Brookfield has the most to offer from a bar/restaurant vantage. I've been to Jose's Blue Sombrero and that was pretty good. Brookfield is pretty much connected to Waukesha (north of I-94).

I've been to a couple Bucks games, a Christopher Moore book signing @ Boswell Books, and a couple shows in Madison (Ted Leo & David Sedaris - last night, actually). And, a co-worker got offered free tickets to see AC/DC tomorrow night, so I'm going to that as well (not a huge fan, but hey, free tickets).

Yeah that place was surprisingly good. Looks like a chain, but it's not. Love the guac they make in front of you.

There's a killer gigantic bowling alley in Waukesha somewhere with a live band stage and triple-decker 4-sided viewing around it. For a bowling alley, that shit was impressive. Also I could die a very happy man if I never saw Bluemound Road again.

Confirmed, I used to live on 92nd and Bluemound and I pretty much couldn't stand living there.

Played there with Ryan a couple weeks ago. Yeah I was super impressed by that room.

Restaurant rec(s): Cafe Manna on Brookfield Road, off Capitol Drive. For your vegetarian/vegan needs.

Movie rec(s): Landmark Cinemae (Downer &/or Oriental). To feel properly pompous, as an Obner should.

Bar rec(s): Axel's. Come for the cheap brews, stay for the roofies. (Naw, not really a date-rapey bar, just really divey.)

I have nothing to add other than I love all the town names being mentioned.

's where we first saw him play, scouting wedding bands. They were covering Guster when we walked in.

Used to be a rather crummy venue, at least in terms of draw, too. Lots of Baby Boomer nostalgia: Canned Heat, Hot Tuna, Gato Barbiere. Fucking bullshit. Ever since the truly crummy Globe closed, though, the Shank's been doing better to get more relevant performers.

Went to both last night... "Greenberg" @ Oriental, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" @ Downer. I felt very elitist, and I loved it (as an Obner should)... ;-).

Thinking about going to the Crispin Glover event next Thursday @ The Oriental. Might be interesting.

Thing about the Landmarks, I'm confused when they started showing almost-exclusively art-house & independent fare. It's not the norm for the chain -- check any theatre listing for Landmark, outside the Miltown; it's no different than a Regal or AMC -- & I remember seeing Home Alone II at the Downer when I was 12. So, the turnabout happened mid 90s, I suppose. I did see Pi at the Oriental back in '98. Not definitive, though.
