I'd like to thank the academy, Shawn Fanning, God, and my beautiful wife. You have been my rock. Without you, none of this would have been possible....

Does this mean I gained an automatic berth into the next tourney?

BANG! First racer to 30 wins. If two + people cross 30 in the same leg, the photo-finish is who has the highest score.

rabbit - Drive-By Truckers - George Jones Cell Phone Talkin' Blues : hey remember that DBT thread? now it's bort's time to shine! great musicians, weak songwriting, and the vocals are not up my alley. Still, i'm sure this is slightly better than what's on the CMAs. 4/10

kingdom - Beach House - Teen Dream : Pleasantly ok. what more is there to say about this band? evoking neither hatred or love is sometimes looked upon as a poor trait for a band, but this still gets a 5/10

freude - Julian Casablancas - Out of the Blue : One of my fav songs off this album. Perfect example of rock/pop that sounds clean and full instead of sterile and bloated. 8/10

ft - Broken Bells - October : I'd love to see frac jump off the starting block but this isn't gonna do it. what's the hype with these guys? ahhhh, Shins + Gnarls. tolerable but not feelin it. 4/10

shamwow - The Plastic Pals - Here Comes The Sun : kinda sounds like psych-garage stuff from a Nuggets cd. just this side of average, as most of these acts are. 6/10

freude is in the lead but it's still anyone's win!

rabbit - Neil Young - Out on the Weekend : This reminds me I need to make a Neil Young mix. What a burst of speed! 10/10

kingdom - Rolling Stones - Some Girls (live) : WTF?!?! I need to make a Rolling Stones mix too. this doesn't give me good memories of open mic night in college like Neil did though. bite me. 8/10

freude - Miles Kurosky - Notes From The Polish Underground: i kinda like this guy. kinda liked beulah. this kinda plods along, but i kinda like it. kinda like it score of 6/10

ft Queens of the Stone Age - Medication : pretty good round we got going. probably one of the better super groups out there today (are they still doing stuff?). Wish this rocked slightly harder - maybe it's my computer speakers. and it's a shorter song too. bouns. 8/10 (as i type all this BS, the next track is some heinous Eagles shit. literally, the Eagles - keep your head in the game, frac!)

shamwow - Adam Ant - Yours, Yours, Yours : hey, this sounds pretty 80s. Totally sounds like a B-side though. With good reason. 5/10

rabbit starts to run like his name to 14

kingdom hot on his heels at 13

freude also keeping pace at 14

ft kicking in at 12

shamwow bringing up the rear at 11

con't

rabbit Drive-By Truckers - Zip City : Hey it's that band I don't like, playing some typical alternative country that lasts for 5 minutes. 3/10

kingdom Beach House - Lover of Mine Beach House time saver. 5/10

freude The Hours - Ali In The Jungle These guys sound like a "professional" rock band. rocking but in a safe way. 5/10

ft M Ward - Stars of Leo : a breath of something at least semi-fresh. i like him in small doses and this does the trick, 6/10

shamwow The Penetrators - Checkpoint Echo : This is surf rock, but it's the best thing i've heard this leg of the race so i'm going with 7/10

rabbit at 17
kingdom at 18
freude at 19
ft at 18
shamwow back in it at 18

well i was going to say "this is average surf rock" but left out the average as i somehow thought it would help justify my score. i like surf rock, but as with any genre, there's unique, great stuff and there's generic, same samey stuff.

rabbit Rick Pino - Show Us Your Glory : Awww, I was gonna make fun of this guy but I see that he's Christian rock. And I'm not againt the genre in general, but when it's bad, it's really bad. I'm not listening to 8+ minutes of "show us your gloooooory" 2/10

kingdom Ours - Dizzy : i'm hoping this is going to be a quiet/loud dynamic song. But it's not. just uneventful alt rock. "how come, we hurt the ones we neeeeed?" sheesh. then the falsetto comes in. 3/10

freude White Rabbits - Percussion Gun : cool. i might want this track for my drum mix. i kinda like this band, though i've only ever heard tracks that people put on their year-end mixes. i need the hook up on this. cool drums and some harmonies. way to pick up some speed freude! 7/10

ft Black Francis - The Sues : ahhhh Frank. Hit and miss these days my friend. I'll give him a little score bump because at least he's not trying to re-write a Pixies b-side this time. 5/10

shamwow The Vapors - Turning japanese : There are a bunch of good songs on New Clear Days but still, this is a timeless hit for a reason. 10/10

rabbit breaks down at 19
kingdom stumbles at 20
freude pushes it to 26
ft maintains at 23
shamwow pulls out in front with 28

It's still anybody's race. (except rabbit, and probably kingdom - sorry dudes). In the event that two or more scores go past 30, the total score that is highest wins!

exciting!

final stretch

rabbit Broken Social Scene/Brendan Canning : Something For All Of Us : Pointless intro...but once the song starts it's pretty cool. I think BSS seem kinda average on the surface, but if you spend some time with them a little bit more than rock/pop reveals itself. still, that's an investment i don't have time to make these days. 5/10

kingdom TV On The Radio - Wash The Day : These guys have a few great songs, but this isn't one of them. The mish mash of genres just sounds like that brown finger painting i did in kindergarten. 4/10

freude The Fratellis - Flathead : One of two awesome songs on that album. Now THIS is a good example of rock being accessible and creative. Instead of the standard form, this song goes verse/chorus/verse/extended chorus/breakdown thing/second breakdown thing/pre-chorus/instrumental chorus part/chorus/solo. Love to play it loud in my car. 9/10

ft Sahara Hotnights - Stupid Tricks : I forgot about these girls for a while. They had some nice jams. 5/10

shamwow Soap Star Joe - If I Were A Telescope Never heard of him before but this is some pleasant pop. 6/10

AT THE FINISH LINE

rabbit at 24
kingdom at 24
freude at 35 GOLD MEDAL WINNER!!!!!!!
ft at 28 BRONZE MEDAL WINNER
shamwow 34 SILVER MEDAL WINNER

congrats freude!

How can a line like "If they found me hanging from a tree, would they say I was listening to Led Zeppelin III" score anything less than an 8?

on the bort score-o-meter, any LZ reference is an automatic -2 to the score.
