The Beatles

First off, I want to say I DONT HATE THE BEATLES IN ANY SENSE.
I have heard every record multiple times over the course of my life.

I just don't get the hype and wonder widely on why they are considered the 'Holy Grail of Modern Music.' They wrote some catchy pop songs. They wrote some catchy more sophisticated pop songs.

They didn't invent harmonies, and they didn't invent music...Maybe it's more some of the Beatle fans I have encountered who bug me more then anything.

They were a great band and wrote great songs, but in my eyes, far from the be all of music...Nothing they did would make my Top 500 list.

I've tried and tried, picked up 4 albums over the years when I've spotted them in used bins, given them plenty of chances, but I've finally admitted that Husker Du does nothing for me. The incessant midrange they filter everything through annoys me, and they never recorded anything I find as interesting as their "Eight Miles High" cover.

Sugar and "Workbook" I like, oddly enough.

HAVE YOU HEARD READY TO DIE!?!!??!

Rap is all about finding new and unique ways to make the same themes resonate, and lines like 'Fuck the World, Fuck my Moms and my Girl, my Life is played out like a jheri curl, I'm Ready to Die" and "My Momma got cancer in her breast, don't ask me why I'm motherfucking stressed, shit done changed" are about as tight as you can get. Pluse, the beats are all hott, and the only exception I think you can find to this album is raggedy ass, busta ass, sorry as Puffy riding Big's jock on the background of every track. If this ever gets remastered, I hope they take that shit off.

This album may or may not have had a lot to do with me not driving my car into on coming traffic or taking a steel-jacketed anti-depressant to the back of the head in 1997.

Not every band is for everybody. Who cares if you hate Joy Division, Sonic Youth, and Bad Brains? The majority of the public doesn't like them either. They're still awesome.

To be hypocritical now: The only band that qualifies for me would be Modest Mouse. I just don't like them for some reason.

I can see that hating one of these probably means you hate the other two, they share a lot of similarities.

i don't love any of biggies albums. but a collection of his b-sides, unreleased songs and and guest appearances is what makes him one of the top 3 in my book. But Ready to Die is bloated with way too long skits and songs that don't do it for me.

I thought I'd start to see it over the years but I've hated them since I first heard them.

Wilco and My Bloody Valentine are brilliant as far as I'm concerned. To each their own, though.

alic in chains are the worst, with soundgarden a close second (though i sort of like a handfull of soundgarden songs)

Sonic Youth - They have neither good tunes or interesting noise. They may be influential, but give me any of the bands influenced by them over SY anyday. Daydream Nation is a snore-fest, a pretentious piece of self- absorbed wankery to my ears, and Kim Gordon is one of the most annoying singers I've heard.

You nailed it, Mikey! I totally agree, bolstered by the fact that they were the WORST live performance I've ever seen (opening for Neil Young & Crazy Horse -- who were awesome -- on the Ragged Glory tour).

I will add Radiohead, because they bore me. I realize that the fault lies with me and my unsophisticated ears, but I am willing to accept the blame in this instance. The only song of theirs I enjoy is "Idioteque."

The caterwauling of bands like Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney also do not appeal to me. In fact, they annoy me.

You may now commence with firing the rocks and garbage in my general direction, or feel free to tar and feather me via PM.

Between Radiohead and the Lakers, you must view me as something of an arch-nemesis. Speaking of the Lakers, I haven't been keeping close tabs on the lower half of the standings...how are they doing these days?

As long as everybody else is making themselves look like tasteless idiots, I guess I've got nothing to lose.

I don't like:

MC5
The Smiths
Primal Scream
Massive Attack

I'm sure there are more, but the older I get, the harder it is for me to list things like this. Generally the more time I spend actually listening to an acclaimed artist, the harder it becomes to hate them. There are very few exceptions.

I'm kinda on the fence/ indifferent about these:

Prince
The Replacements
Sex Pistols

Never been a fan, and dont choose to hear any of these:

Bob Dylan

Sonic Youth
Mudhoney
REM after Green
A. Keyes
Tupac
NIN after Pretty Hate Machine
Basically any Rap..Dont like it, Critically acclaimed or not.

You're killing me!

How can you not like Massive Attack? Ok, 100th Window is a weak record, but Blue Lines?? Mezzanine?? Even Protection are very cool records.

Vanishing Point from Primal Scream is one of my favorite records of 97. Just about every track is great. It's a bit dated now, but still a killer record. Evil Heat was disappointing but still has some nice tracks.

Ft, I'm with you on those two. I've tried and tried to listen to SK and just can't get into them. And because of that I've never even bothered to Le Tigre. With Sleater not floating my boat I don't think Le Tigre would either.

Re: The Redwalls and age issue- I had heard only two of their songs and absolutely loved what I had heard, and it was only a month later I found out their age status. So no I can say I don't think it's an age issue. I think it's just that they are a bit reminiscent of The Beatles(or at least they rip off some the style of their music) and that's what endears those that like them, to them. Like myself. But I've not yet heard the whole album so I can't comment any further.

And Wilco, my only defense is that I now come to the conclusion that unless you really like their style of music and that bands like them, you won't like or get them. I do feel though that their experimentation can feel a bit bloated i.e. AGIB.

I'm not going to slag you off for not liking these artists, but to choose not to listen to them? Why? I imagine 3/4 of the bands you listen to are in some form influenced by Dylan. And to deny yourself the brilliance of Waits is just mindblowing. I'd be more than happy to burn & forward you any copy from his catalog.

Btw, I second the Primal Scream & Massive Attack nominations. I've not heard the entire output from either, but from what I have, it ain't my bag. Swastika Eyes is fun to sing shitfaced at karaoke, though.
