this is all well and good but the fact that your not posting a 2009 list of albums is nagging you really baffles me. but hey, whatever tickles your pickle

My comments:

Avett Bros lost me with this one. They're an emo band. Femdisco luuuuuves them.

Ola Podrida grabbed me from the start. I can't really explain it fully, but it is indie-folk without being pussy. And the production values Derris mention also help the cause

Neko Case kicks ass. She's my top 5'er for lifer. Love that chick and Middle Cyclone was unfuckwithable.

I lost that Oneida in the great hard drive meltdown of '10. Guess I'll have to re-download it. I said it in the thread dedicated to the album, but Rated O was the album of theirs I'd been waiting for since Secret Wars, which is my favorite by them.

The Films seems like something I should check out.

Not sure why I don't have that Takers album? Maybe you gave me the disc and I misplaced it, cos it's not on my HD -- good album as I remember.

And I totally wrote off JTE, sounds like I need to revisit.

Read about this about a month ago and found it online. Some great classic country going on here.

I was talking up that album to anyone that would listen last year. I think Radcliffe was the only one who gave it a listen and it was too countreeb for him.

That levon helm is much better than it has any right to be. The EC was a real grower. I like the JTE.

Cracker, D Jr, Robyn Hitchcock, and Tim Easton were all disappointments for me.

Levon Helm – Electric Dirt

I can’t believe everyone in that Dead listening thread weren’t all over this at some point last year. Hell, it even starts with a cover of “Tennessee Jed”. Anyway, please please please when I’m age 69, be able to do ANYTHING as good as what Helm has done here. Any fan of the Band’s work should get this immediately. The whole thing is Helm’s interpretations of other people’s songs (except for 2 co-written with Larry Campbell) but it also feels energized and fresh. “Kingfish” sounds like an outtake straight from “Rock of Ages” and sounds like it should be played during a Mardi Gras parade. Just feel good music.

This is a great album. It didn't appear on my list from last year because I didn't hear it until December but it would definitely have been Top 10, probably even Top 5.

Glad you took the time Derris. Worth the read. I'll have to revisit some to be sure I still don't like them; otherwise I had a decent overlap of albums where I agree with you.

I coulda sworn I d/l that Dave Alvin based on your rec. BG but I'll be damned if I can find it.

I tried a number of times with both EC and Cracker but never got much out of either one.

Our big music parallels from last year are probably Lucero and Deer Tick, Derris: my top two and two of your favorites as well.

I mean, maybe "nagging" isn't the right word. Maybe just reminded that I never actually organized any of my thoughts on the music year of 2009? It is a music board first and foremost after all.

haha. If you notice I said there is a fine line and that there is a danger in continuing to follow the road they're on. The problem is that they're all married and having kids and living in rural NC. Not much chance the suddenly pick up some edge somewhere. Still, liked this one and their live show was great.

I burned it for you when you came up for some random weekday meeting. You've got a physical copy somewhere. You actually texted me the line "You say you're just a social smoker..........only drink whisky that's 10 years or older."

derris, my thoughts on lucero and deer tick - especially the referenced songs - are virtually identical to yours

totally agree on neko, as well

gar is right, though - you have also shown an alarming uptick in ppdd intake (haha)

auerbach - Top 10 album for me last year. The song writing managed to be both rootsy and varied.
lucero - Not sure if I'm suffering from a little Lucero fatigue but I can't really get into this one. On the surface it seems like I should like it but I have zero interest to play it.
blitzen trapper - like some of their stuff, never heard this
aa bondy - This album needs to be played a lot b/c it's a grower. I can see where it might seem boring at first, but there are some deep deep hooks in there. Simple yet executed perfectly.
kweller - fail
phoenix - good album but i prefer the previous one.
pink mountaintops - I like the first black mountain record, but this dude has totally jumped the shark.
black lips - Top 10 album for me.
dylan - Derris nailed it.
deer tick - Top 10 album. The guy has all the right influences.
reigning sound - decent
xx - I was wrong about this. It's fantastic and I was pretty harsh on it in the beginning but I've I come around to it.
yeah yeah yeahs - very good
earle, jt - I liked it from the beginning. top 20 album.
earle, steve - big disappointment. made me appreciate Townes more, actually, cuz Steve's versions pale in comparison.
alvin - keep wanting to check this out
animal collective - Worst shit I've ever heard.

The Films – Oh, Scorpio

The best out of left field surprise pop gem of the year for me. If you don’t know these guys they play a kind of retro alt-pop style of music that is crazy catchy and melodic (I think I had “Amateur Hour” in my head for a week at one point). Including 50’s sha la la’s and the like. This one was produced by Butch Walker if that helps give you a better idea. This is a fantastic summer record that I didn’t discover until last Fall. So, it should get some more spins in the coming weeks. Mcaputo, if you are reading this, you might dig these guys. Kind of in your wheelhouse with regards to pop stuff (Outrageous Cherry, El Goodo, etc).

I really dug Don't Dance Rattlesnake and will listen to almost anything Butch Walker touches but for some reason I missed this completely. Got it downloading now, thanks Derris.
