Out of the Past

excellent movie. a few years ago, tcm showed this and double indemnity back-to-back. i liked out of the past way more.

Yeah, I thought it was great...though I think Double Indemnity almost had the better story line. In terms of production and overall feel of the movie, Out of the Past wins out for me.

Out of the Past is in my top ten ever and is the quintessential noir for me.

Loved it. One of my favorite foreign films I've ever seen. Great caper flick too with so much underlying commentary on nature of man.

Platoon. i'm not sure how it got to be 2010 without me seeing platoon, but i thought it was very well done. and i'm not really an oliver stone fan. sheen, berenger and dafoe were all terrific. since i've also been watching "the pacfic" these last few weeks, i kept instinctually comparing the battle scenes. good stuff.

His Girl Friday. i'm a lot more familiar with cary grant as a dramatic actor, but i've liked him well enough in mr blandings builds his dream house and the awful truth to know what to expect from him in these comedies. also, this comes with pretty lofty praise. at first i was a little annoyed with the fast-paced dialogue, but then it made sense and i came to enjoy it. the one-liners here are terrific, especially the famous "ralph bellamy" line and "he's got a lot of charm"/"his grandfather was a snake" ones. story was a bit far-fetched, but it's not really about moving along a plot as much hijinks. enjoyable.

The Losers. everyone can agree that movies adapted from comic books have the best credit sequences, right? ok. i didn't really know much about this series aside from it having some A-teamish qualities (a framed special ops team out for revenge). i didn't get much more out of it than that. this is a perfectly acceptable saturday afternoon matinee. there's a hot girl, some soldiers, jason patric as a complete asshole and things blow up.

Got drug to Kick Ass last night and actually enjoyed it. Something about watching an eleven year old girl kill a bunch of mutha fuckas is kinda fun. Fuck Roger Ebert.

Harold and Maude

The concept of this kept me away for too long. The plot of young dude falls in love with old chick seemed silly to me. I couldn't have been more wrong. It was disturbingly funny like a great dark comedy should be. It's fascination with death really carried the plot and elevated the story out of what I feared would just be creepy. There is zero chance this movie could be made today. I may watch it again tonight.

I've seen this a million times, and I could still watch it almost every day despite it being just shy of 3 hours long. My girlfriend had never seen it so I figured I'd show it to her since we've been having a rainy week. The way that Tarantino plays with dialog is just incredible, as is the way that he sets up the entire movie. I just love all the long takes that he does (Jules and Vincent walking through the apartment complex discussing the ethics of a foot massage and Vincent and Mia walking into Jackrabbit Slims, among others). Easily in my top 5 ever.

The plot is what has kept me away from it as well. I'll add it to the hundreds of other films I haven't seen, but put it somewhat towards the top.

A Prophet - Great movie... good character development, can see a detailed account of prison turning you into a different person.

City Island - sure, some sterotypes & cliches, but one of the best movies I've seen this year... maybe the best. Very funny.

Watched the first hour of this last night. So far so good. I've always been a sucker for prison movies, so this one has an advantage before it even starts.

******POSSIBLE SPOILER*******

The way the movie builds on the fact that the main character has to kill that dude or that old dude will kill him, was really well executed. I felt like I was going through all the same emotions the main character was going through, as in "oh shit, if I don't kill that guy, I'm going to get killed, I HAVE to kill someone to live! oh no!" and so on and so on. Then the scene where he's in the guys cell and is trying to keep his cool and keep from cutting up his mouth too much with the razor hidden in his cheek... intense.

********End of possible Spoilers************

Looking forward to the second half tonight.

Last couple of things I've seen:

Moon. Really enjoyed this. I love this kind of minimal, low-budget sci-fi, and Sam Rockwell was great. The ending could have been better.

Up in the Air. Good, not great. It was somewhat memorable, though, I'll give it that. Nice assortment of comedians/comedic actors as well. Zack Galifianakis was a definite highlight, but just doing his usual shtick, more or less. Danny McBride is really lucky to have a career, not that he was bad or anything. Is it that hard to find a fat, redneck-ish guy in Hollywood?

Moon was really great, I thought. Like you said, minimal, low-budget sci-fi pulled off well, which is such a rarity now.

Logan's Run. i have a friend who's been pushing me to see this since college. every time it came up that i hadn't seen it, he threw a mini-tantrum. i expected it to be something really special. it's not. i like the general concept, but the execution had numerous flaws. also, i didn't care for ustinov's character or the idea that he was much of a natural survivalist. but i did think the vulcan hand gesture was funny.

Last night I saw the Swedish movie, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which is based on the international best seller by Stieg Larsson and is one book of the "Millenium trilogy." It,without a doubt, has some very disturbing scenes in it and a few plot holes that are probably due to the adaptation from what has to be an extremely detailed novel. I recommend it, but femdisco actually buried her head in my shoulder for 4 - 5 scenes in the movie. It's a thriller/murder mystery that involves a very wealthy family called the Vangers who have ties to the Nazis. It takes on religion, misogyny, fascism, racism and some brutal sexual deviance.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 85 if you're into that - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/millenium_le_film/

Watched City Island last night. Pretty good. Garcia was great. Kinda felt like some happy-ending-Hollywood movie I've seen many times over, but with a dark twist. Recommend.

That's 2 for 2 this week huskerpunk. What's next?
