The review is hard to get through, but the album is summed up well. Mosty disappointing from someone from whom we expect more.

I'll freely admit I couldn't get through 1/4 of it.

the album or the review? I'm not going to judge this album till I hear it in its entirety. That Hell Yes EP was hot. I think I'm going to dig this either way!

i've already been describing this album as 'my album of the spring'....and i've had the pre-mix leak for quite a while.....

its so much better mixed for anyone that has heard the leak and is on the fence.....

i really like this album....but i really like beck (all sides) alot too!

The album is disappointing, but still decent.
Just about half of the record sounds like b sides to Odelay.
Thats kind of what I expected whith a second team up with the dust brothers.

When can we stop relying on Pitchfork to tell us what to think?

They botched the Roots Manuva review, IMO. I mean, you've gotta listen to the thing more than once.

The album isn't nearly as much of a disappointment to me as the new REM was when it came out last fall.

A) Not till PFM's in glossy form.

B) Agreed.

Way love. There's some great tracks on that album - 'The Falling' is the best, pretty bleak though.

Possibly the worst gimmick PFM review I've read in years. Utter shit.

That being said, I hardly disagree with the rating. Guero is the sound of Beck treading water and I ask you: is that what you want to hear one of the most creative solo artists of the past 10 years doing when he gets the Odelay gang together again? I'm hoping it'll grow on me and that my initial response is just a problem of expectations being set too high, but goodness...it's funny how often I run to Odelay, Mutations, or One Foot shortly after a listen to Guero.

I haven't listened to note one of Guero. But I certainly wouldn't rely on Pitchfork to let me know what to think. I was posting only about the review.

I also know that bashing Pitchfork isn't a novelty. It's only that it seems they've been storing up this device for a few months just so they could use it for this particular review.

I didn't care for Sea Change at all. I think I'll wait and pick up the new one used.

Do the Weakerthans get a residual for the album cover? Or, more aptly, does said band's illustrator?

i like the album. i guess i don't understand the expectations of Beck. he's already done a alterna-folk album, a lo-fi album, a dance record, and a lush acoustic album. and then there's Odelay which is like a mix of column a and coulumn b, and Mutations which is like another mix of column c and column d. what did we want to hear from him? an electric guitar rock album? metal? emo? nothing but beats and rhymes and guest rappers? or maybe our expectations were so high we were waiting for him to invent another completely new, never before heard genre in it's entirety (again!)

the guy has been making music for 15 years and has put out 6 fairly unique albums (compared not only to each other but to most of the modern music world). to "regress" to an ealier sound might seem like a step back, but to ask for a 7th completely unique album is asking a bit too much, IMO.

re: B-Sides. i understand the connotation when you say "it sounds like B-Sides" you mean that they sound like leftovers or throwaways, but the fact of the matter is that Beck has AWESOME B-sides. Additionally, i have his Odelay-era 12" and 7" records and while most of the b-sides (and even a few of the remixes) are quite good, everything on Guero is much better.

I've seen this simile trotted out a lot recently and I have to say I don't like it very much. 'Guereo' are Odelay's B-sides, 'Human After All' are the B-sides to Discovery blah blah blah. Enough, just say you don't like the new release and move on.

I haven't heard Guero yet, but I'll likely pick it up today if the price is right. I've pretty much liked everything he's done, even Stereopathetic Soul Manure.

shite! how could i forget about SSM! make that 7 albums. although to be fair that record is just a collection of various early recordings, not a proper album so to speak. that being said it has some great, great, classic stuff on there. rowboat, puttin' it down, satan gave me a taco. fans should not dismiss this release, esp. if you like One Foot In The Grave.

Yeah, "Satan Gave Me A Taco" is not dismissable. Prime Beck.
