David Simon's open letter to New Orleans explaining the inaccurate appearance of a Hubig's pie in the pilot

Quote:
In the first episode of "Treme," to be broadcast tonight on HBO, a character will reach into her purse and produce an apple-flavored Hubig's pie. She will do this in late November 2005. With the rest of her dessert menu no longer available, the character, a local chef, will then serve the local delicacy to a patron of her restaurant.
We offer this bit of information freely, as Exhibit A in what will surely become a long list of cited inaccuracies, anachronisms and equivocations through which New Orleanians reassure themselves that not only is our little drama a fiction, but that those who have perpetrated this fiction are indifferent to facts, chronologies, historical possibilities.
True, the Hubig's bakery in the Marigny did not reopen until February 2006, and true therefore, any such pastry found in a woman's purse should by rights be a pre-Katrina artifact and therefore unsuitable for anyone's dessert.

A ton of people tweeted about this inaccuracy minutes after it happened. It's like they're trying to spot the mistakes.

Also, that letter was released on Sunday before the premiere, so he was copping to the fact that while they will be as accurate as possible, these things will happen simply for purposes of the story.

Trying to give this show a chance, but so far, it's not grabbing me. Plus I find Steve Zahn highly annoying.

No shit? One of my favorite books the past few years. And, the Wire is still the best thing ever on HBO. On TV, really.

Co-sign this. Femgar thinks he is a molo.

Digging watching Bunk and Freamon work and the music is great but I'm not quite grasping the narrative just yet.

The Wire was the same way for me though. Took a few eps for it to really get it's hooks in me.

I can definitely tell I'm going to like this show, but I'm not at the point yet where'd I'd go out of my way to recommend this show to people, like I do with the Wire. But I'm already getting that "Ooh, sweet, Treme is on tonight!" feeling. My point is, I think, that I'm sticking with this show until it's not on the air anymore.

This is another problem for me. In my head I still think "Bunk" and "Freamon," hell I couldn't even tell you their new character's names yet.

Locals have a major hard-on for this show.

Funny, since John Goodman's character apparently does too now.

I am really starting to get into the show now. I feel like some dark shit is going to start happening though, especially to the female violinist.

I really want to like this show but so far it's not happening (I haven't seen the newest episode).

Problems:

1. Shitty script
2. Lazy writing
a. Too many in-your-face New Orleans references (throwing blatant references to crawfish, red beans and rice, etc. in the script...plus the guy wearing a Finn McCools shirt in episode 2)
3. Going overboard with the community thing (Goodman's rant in episode 1, the whole street musician vs. Wisconsin kids scene in episode 2 -- TRULY cringeworthy)
4. None of the actors seem appropriate for their roles
a. Steve Zahn (in general)

I still want to give it a shot, but so far it seems like it's coming from a bunch of first-time directors/screenwriters rather than a bunch of veterans.
