...is playing in Norfolk this weekend. Probably the first time he's been here and I can't imagine it'll be any time soon that he'll be back.

I have a hockey game I am going to that night and am probably gonna leave a bit early to go see him as the venue is about 1.5 miles from the arena. No one to go with though. Ah well. I am super excited. I have had a man crush on this dude for years.

Anyone wanna come to Norfolk for about 1.5 hours of Mark Kozelek? :) Anyone actually seen him? Thoughts on his live performances?

It's part of some "Discovery Music" thing the city is doing. I saw Ane Brun there last weekend. I will probably start a thread about that on it's own given one of the openers was quite good. It'll be later though since I want to upload a track for it...

EDIT: I should add, I have never seen him live before, in case that wasn't clear.

He's great, but damned depressing...

My wife, friend and I went to see him in Bmore on his last EC trek...under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. Incredible show. Everyone was hushed, and completely in awe of his ability. For me, it was like listening to the records which, in Koz's case isn't a bad thing.

You'll enjoy it. Just don't yet out stuff for him to play or you might get mocked. He was in a surly mood when we saw him, after being sick from the night before.

haha. I am curious to know what songs he'll choose since he is just, apparently, coming alone. I hope he has the 12 string with him. :)

I am certainly excited. Also, I have never been the "yell stuff out for the artist to play" kinda guy.

Geoff Stanfield was playing with him for some songs, dunno if he's on the current tour or not.

I haven't seen him since the final red house painters tour...they were great that night but they shot their wad so early by playing their best material first ...

Yeah, I've seen him several times... last time solo. It was very "reverential"... like F. Rabbit says above. It was more like a peformance of high art songs, German lieder or the like, than an Americana alt-rocker singer songwriter. He is one of my favorites, but I don't think I'd see him again without a band in back of him.

My wife will inevitably order this, so I'll listen when it comes. Good to know. Digging on that EP as well. "I'll be There"...I really want to hear that.

I've only just now started listening to this guy, with the earliest Red House Painters stuff, Down Colorful Hill, which I dig a lot. I had always written this guy off as terminally boring (based on hearing little bits here and there from a friend), but now I'm thinking I might have a lot of rewarding music in front of me.

I'm thinking I may get this new album next (knowing that it'll probably be pretty different) and work my way toward the middle of his catalog.

I dig Songs for a Blue Guitar by RHP, but I like his Sun Kil Moon stuff more mostly based upon the unfuckwithable Ghosts of the Great Highway. I also ended up liking April a lot.

As previously reported, ex-Red House Painters frontman Mark Kozelek's Sun Kil Moon project will release its fourth album, Admiral Fell Promises, July 13 via Kozelek's own Caldo Verde label. Kozelek recorded the entire album all by his lonesome with nylon string guitar; the chilly, haunting "Australian Winter" is a good introduction to the new LP's sound.
