by the way, i'm really looking forward to hearing their new album, but i've decided to not download it and have yet to get out and buy it yet, but from what i've heard i shouldn't be disappointed.

Awesome.

Hmmm. This will probably make no sense, but let's see. There are bands who are "postmodern" (yes) and bands who are "modern" (no). "Postmodern" - though it itself is a tired, worn term - are those whose music, in some way, is about music - self-referential, and ironic (c.f. humor above), not just or even in lyrics, but some framing of the "narrative" of the music and band, both the marketed filtered story of how they sound and someway the actual sounds of the guitars, the melodic lines, the broken and pulled apart and fragmentary shards of the popular song, at least to some degree acknowledges the loss of innocence, the Fall from Grace that consciousness forces, the loss of God, and disintegration of cultural norms and signposts, and is music about this layeredness. Jane's Addiction yes, Guns and Roses no. Cure yes, Echo and the Bunnymen no. Pavement yes, Pearl Jam no. X yes, Black Flag no. The Stones yes, Led Zep no. Kraftwerk yes, Can no. You see where I am going with this. More recently: My Morning Jacket yes, Band of Horses no. The "nos" have their appeal, are Romantic with a big R.

In this framing: The National, with lovely toons, and clean guitar world sound, is a no.

It does make sense but some of the conclusions are pretty silly. To each his own though.

Just saying, the guys that Berninger kinda reminds me of: a watered down version of Cohen or Cave or even David Berman, were all funny fuckers. Even though outwardly they seem to appear "depressing" to non-fans, I find all of those guys' humor is what keeps me interested.

I can normally get down with Harry's acid grandfather transcendental wisdom, but this is nonsense.

FWIW, "I don't have the drugs to sort it out" is a pretty funny line.

Come over to gramp's cabin in the woods, I'll make some special tea for you, we'll dress in the magic robes, and will explain the occult foundations behind this. Deerhunter yes, Interpol no. Strokes yes, Real Estate no.

so did anyone actually watch this?

i thought it was fine. though it's hard to gauge an atmosphere via a webcast. the stream was good quality, but there was a lot of pausing for video buffering, even if the audio played throughout. the thing i always like about the national live is that they vary from recorded arrangements. it's never major, only noticeable. i'm looking forward to seeing them in august. maybe high violet will sink in by then. all of their records have taken numerous listens to sink in for me.

I happened to be in NYC last weekend and I went to the concert. Very tight, indeed. BAM is a beautiful theater. Here are some photos that I snapped (illegally...)

so this moved like 55,000 units last week, good enough for 3rd on billboard 200. that's not too bad, even though overall sales were pretty dismal.

Does anyone else hear Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly" in "Bloodbuzz Ohio"?

I see what you mean but it didn't immediately jump out at me. The verses and vocals definitely have a similar feel in parts.

Yep, I'd agree. Thankfully, no Looking for Astronauts moments but unfortunately no Apartment Story moments either, although Bloodbuzz does come close.

I mentioned it elsewhere, but I'm always humming "among the missing sons of daughters of the soho riots" over "i was carried, to ohio on a swarm of bees"....and parts of mistaken for strangers over lemonworld. They've re-used a few tricks on this record.
