A grand total of 3 people will read this if I post it in the hip-hop forum, so I'm posting here, but this is worth going through. Tons of tracks I wasn't aware of, which isn't saying a whole lot, but I'm guessing a lot of you will be in the same boat. Each example gives you the full song being sampled and the hip-hop song that samples it as well as a small write up. I figure some of you might be interested.

Yeah, can we get rid of the hip hop forum already?

Drawing a line between "rock/pop" and "hip hop", and discussing them in separate forums is entirely unnecessary. I want all that shit in the one place.

This, please. The hip-hop forum is a ghetto and not in the keeping it real ghetto super star way but in the keeping this thing away from this thing sort of way.

Jon, you know I dig you, but what does that mean?

Most of these people ARE white.

Listening to any music doesn't change your color, your environment, your youth, or anything.

Either you dig a kind of music or you don't, and just because you're exposed to it doesn't mean you dig it, nor should you be expected to.

Likewise, being of a certain ethnic origin shouldn't preclude you from enjoying anything, or afford you a superiority over anyone else because it is music that "belongs" to your ethnicity.

Music is communication, either it speaks to you or it doesn't.

What's got you pissed?

What Mick said without what Leon said.

It's just superfluous.

EDIT: Although the easiest thing would be to do what paper did, and just post it here anyways, but without the bitching about where we do or don't click on the fucking internet. It's not like this place is exactly hopping. Everyone pull your panties out of your crack.

I'm not very interested in sampling (or hip-hop lately), but this is still pretty cool. Reminds me that I really should check out some David Axelrod.

Wow this thread got the dander raised post-haste.

I know almost nothing about hip-hop, but greatly enjoyed this link. This shit is really why I come to obner - to experience thoughtful discussion about music which I'd otherwise not encounter.

seems fairly strange to have a collections of the best samples and not have "funky drummer"

I was sure it was going to be number 1, and then thought maybe it would be number 2 so they could be controversial, then maybe they'd put it out of the top ten just to be cool, but the fucker isn't even on the list.

Ditto.

I also found it odd (yet extremely validating) that half of Midnight Marauders is scattered across the bottom half of the list.

my friend described the list as, "new york east coast crate digger fetish" or something like that. But he leans southern in his hip hop love and this certainly has an early 90s DITC and Beatnuts skew.
