anyone have a recommendation? portability is key - need this for outdoors (beach, pool, camping, etc), so that narrows the field down a bit.

i have an old JBL OnTour piece o shit, so i think i'm done with them, unless someone wants to vouch for the OnStage?

looking at the logitech pure-fi, but for some reason i don't think i trust logitech for speakers.

do i bite the bullet and get the bose sounddock?

I've had one of those Bose jobs for years and I love it. It's my primary source to play music in my home.

The problem is that you have to have a power source. In the past for something like camping, I've just used an old radio/cd/tape player that can run on batteries. I used a tape adapter for iPod.

i think i need to take a trip to the apple store and try these suckers out. the altec lansings i'm reading about on amazon seem perfect if you trust the customer reviews. and for 1/3 the price of the bose.

Well, that tells you how old mine is.

Still, they are incredible. Unbeatable for sound and they get loud too. Friend of mine has something similar to that Logitech one you posted. Sound wasn't great and it didn't get very loud.

I'm super impressed with my boss's bose sound dock, and my friends B&W zeppelin.

I ordered the OnStage last week. I'd owned a JBL for a couple of years but listening to it in the kitchen while doing all the dishes from dat WABBIT, i got water in it and fryed it. I'm not sure if the one i ruined was the OnStage or the OnTour. They look a lot I like. I liked it though. Sound was good, plenty loud, and it's much more portable looking than the other ones you posted or others I could find on amazon. I want to be able throw it in a small bag for weekend getaways and the larger ones just look too big for my purposes.

I should get the OnStage in the mail in the next week or so. Will post again after hearing it.

I was going to start a thread asking the question in general. Not sure if I've ever noticed one on here.

Going in a different direction - this is a indoor/outdoor wireless speaker that you can also hook up your iPod to. Its weatherproof and I always bring it to the pool or tailgating.

Alternately, you can hook up your computer or audio receiver to the wireless transmitter and listen to music that way. I've had it for years and despite it sometimes being confused with a rice cooker (my friends are racist) it works really well. It uses 8D batteries or can be hooked up to an outlet.

I was "camping" recently and some guys near us had one of these. I was really impressed. Got really loud and looked super easy to tote around.

estone, you should check one of these out if you've got a Brookstone near you. About half the price of the Bose as well.

haha...well actually i've got the same problem re: the brookstone outdoor speaker as you do with your sound dock. i bought one of those years ago for the backyard, and it's old enough that there is no direct ipod hook up. you have to plug your ipod into your receiver, then transmit the signal wirelessly outside. it does sound decent, and does the trick for the backyard even if you have to go inside if you want to change your tunes.

I have the altec lansing and I honestly can tell the difference in quality with my friends bose system. And the altec lansing was a lot cheaper.

Any updates, specific recs on this topic?

estone, what did you settle on?

I've been looking at Altec Lansing stuff, but they make a few different things, and I'm not sure they're all equal. I'd like to stay in roughly the $100 range, but I could spend a little more if I'm convinced I'm getting something really great for the price.

I guess this is the frontrunner at the moment based on price and Amazon customer reviews:

The FoxL v2 is supposed to sound amazing for such a small speaker. Hank likes it so it must be good, right?

That's about twice what I want to spend, and if I'm gonna spend that much, I'd prefer it at least function as an iPod dock.

And I guess portability isn't as big a concern for me, but it would be nice.
