Digital (mp3, etc) - straight out the computer to computer speakers for digital? More involved set up, like a music server? Something else, even?

CD- Still on the computer, or a dedicated system? If so, what you got?

Vinyl (where applicable)- what system/equipment do you use to play records?

I have wireless speakers in my car, and then usually just listen to stuff on CPU or through headphones at home.

50/50 between:

- KEXP on a mac through altec lansing shitball cube speakers from yesteryear (the ones with the sub down by your feet)
- Pro-Ject record player into my old Onkyo receiver from college into the Bose speakers my father in law used to have as his rear surround speakers in the 90's.

a few times I have streamed music over my TV as it can play files on my external hard drive (which is plugged into my airport)

Marsh Sound Design amp/preamp
Marantz universal player for CDs, SACDs, DVD-As (switched to this from a DAC/DVD player transport combo a few years ago and really like it)
Rega P3 turntable
Black Cube phono amp
ProAc speakers

I don't play mp3s on that system (only in the car and on my mp3 player with earbuds).

Full stereo set up in the family/living room although I still need to hook up that turntable that I bought four years ago and never got balanced right. I've been feeling an urge to get the TT hooked up lately but still haven't gotten around to it. Mostly listen to cds through it but occasionally jack in either an ipod for random listening or my laptop for a new dl.

Ipod docking station in the kitchen for tunage while cooking.

Small Bose cd stereo in the bedroom

A shelf system with cd and sirius/xm capability which is still in the box two years later but I should put in the office.

and a boombox with cd player in the bathroom for those long soaks with a martini.

in my room:
discman or ipod >> a really old but excellent telefunken stereo from my grandma >> jbl speakers.
the stereo is from the mid 80s and weighs a ton, the speakers are maybe 10 or 12 years old.
I also use an older technics turntable.

boombox with cd slot in the kitchen and one of those compact surround sound devices for dvd and cd from sony in the living room.

Living room:
PS3 for CDs, Technics Direct Drive turtable, or line-in iPod through old Onkyo amp, some nice shelf speakers (forget the brand), + an insane Hsu subwoofer that goes far beyond overkill. It was a gift, and I generally keep it turned way down to keep the house from crumbling.

Office/Guest room:
Mac for CDs/digital through old Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks/subwoofer (the USB ones)

Nursery:
Discman or mp3 player through newer Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks/subwoofer (headphone jack ones)

I still haven't set up my living room system the way I want to. I should do a 5.1 setup at some point but I'm lazy and don't really know what speakers I should get. I guess I just need new rear ones as I've got a center one that will work.

May get an iPod dock for the bedroom. A portable one would be good (guess I should check out the threads here on that).

Do you have SACD's or something? I guess I don't see why a 5.1 would be beneficial for normal cds other than surrounding you in sound (which, come to think of it, might be cool). I have a 7.1 setup for my tv but haven't ever used it just to play cds or music.

I hook my phone up to some computer speakers. One set of speakers is in the living room, another in the garage, and a third is in the basement.

It's the same system for CDs and such as for DVDs, etc. I guess the 5.1 is irrelevant to an audio discussion because I only have a handful of things that would utilize it.

I own a Yamaha receiver and disc changer with Infinity SM85 loud speakers, but they are packed away in my closet and haven't been used in 2.5 years. So when I do listen to music at home, it's via my Sony Dream Machine.

I listen to music almost exclusively in my car or through my Altec Lansing computer speaker w/ subwooferset-up at work.

I live in a 2 story condo so I don't have a ton of room nor need any elaborate set ups yet.

Living room: Bose Sound Dock. Really more than I'll ever need for that room. This also serves as tunes for the kitchen due to proximity.

Office - Mac with Bose computer speakers (w/ subwoofer). One of those fairly inexpensive record players designed to look "old timey" for vinyl. Sound isn't great but does fine for the small room it's in. Also plays cd's.

Shower - waterproof cd player/radio

When I eventually buy a new house I'll spend some time/money on a more elaborate set up but for now this does the trick.

living room: most often the ipod is hooked up to aux port on onkyo receiver. rarely used denon 5-cd disc changer. built-in infinity surround sound (as my beloved bose acoustimass system gathers dust in the basement).

office: boston acoustics cpu speakers/subwoofer that came with the desktop.

bedroom: teac slimline bookshelf cd/ipod deal.

one day (and not in this house) i'd like to get one of those whole house dealio's like a Sonos system or something.

Toze you know about my old Russound setup in Madison right? I ask because you mentioned media servers.

We rigged up our old place with a CAM6.6 distribution amp and a SMS-3 media server. The media server had 160 gigs, and was internet capable for book marked internet radio sites. The CAM got XM and had 6 zones, all with keypads on the walls. So any room in the house (including the front porch, back porch, and bathroom) could pull up KEXP or XM or anything we had stored by just selecting it on the keypads. It all worked well enough, but we needed money at one point during the move so we sold the rack gear. Speakers and keypads are still there though.. may buy used again and hook it back up with just xm - running the place as a vacation rental now by remote.

Laptop and iPod connected to external iPod speakers, as bedroom/office setup.
Sony direct drive PS11 turntable wired through a Realistic amp and old JVC speakers.
Not that great in either scenario. Which is a bit hypocritical to even be bothering with vinyl. To be improved...

Now I seem to remember some descriptions of that- no doubt a hell of a convenient and sweet set-up. Trying to set up all that zone bidness would probably have me suicidal after about 10 minutes of fumble-fisted effort.

My stuff is all straight forward. I have one system in the living room for computer-based music. From the computer, it goes out wireless to a Squeezebox, then through a tube buffer to soften the edges of the digital files, into an '80's/early '90's Denon integrated amp, and out to a pair of Magnepan smga's I picked up cheap off Craigslist a couple months ago. First time I've actually been able to listen to computer music without getting a headache after about 5 minutes.

Image

I've got the main system in the next room, which USED to be a dining room. Manley Stingray integrated amp, fed by a Music Hall cd25.2 through a Music Hall dac25.2 external DAC for cd's, and a Linn Bask TT for vinyl- all pushed to Shahinian Obelisks speakers (my babies). And spare shit EVERYWHERE in the house and in the apt. out back. Anybody wanna come over and take away any big ass speakers?
