We rigged up our old place with a CAM6.6 distribution amp and a SMS-3 media server. The media server had 160 gigs, and was internet capable for book marked internet radio sites. The CAM got XM and had 6 zones, all with keypads on the walls. So any room in the house (including the front porch, back porch, and bathroom) could pull up KEXP or XM or anything we had stored by just selecting it on the keypads. It all worked well enough, but we needed money at one point during the move so we sold the rack gear. Speakers and keypads are still there though.. may buy used again and hook it back up with just xm - running the place as a vacation rental now by remote.

All my digital music is streamed via an Apple Airport Express via optical cable to either my old Yamaha receiver that pushes my front and back porch speakers that I can select on/off individually. (I also added a separate volume control for the front porch sends the acoustics tend to make it louder out there than the back porch if you are playing both simultaneously) and/or my Onkyo 7.1 surround receiver (though when it's playing music it just plays through the front speakers) for the living room. I also have one of those $100 audio technica turntables hooked up to the onkyo.

In my office, I've got a creative labs 5.1 speaker setup (which is basically just five speakers and a sub blasting the same thing since i'm rarely if ever doing anything but playing mp3 through them) I've had this setup for years and I still think it's a really really great sounding setup. Surprisingly so actually.

In my shop, I've got one of those jbl round speaker thingy's that you can hook your iphone up to and a boombox that does the same though it's barely breathing at this point due to being, well, in a shop for several years. Things happen.

i run two technics 1200s, a 5-disc onkyo and an onkyo cassette deck into a NAD receiver and through JBL speakers. i'm no audiophile, but piecing it together over some years has worked out fine.

Right now just through my laptop or occasionally I'll put a cd in the dvd player. I'm going to get some kind of stero system after I get a few more paychecks.

Sounds to me like you put some nice pieces together. My shit's been a work in progress since about 1970, but I think I'm about done. (Yeh right)

An old Marantz receiver, Sony 5 disc(thing sucks), Bose shelf speakers, a Sunfire(?) subwoofer(free from an abandoned old retail space) and outdoor Bose for the back porch, lasted 10 years in the weather and still sound alright. Computer for my head phone use at night.

The marantz is set up in a relatively small dining room that sorta amplifies the sound fairly well to the kitchen and living area. Also, a great room to play acoustic guitar in like a tile bathroom. Its a relatively small house anyhow so no need for a per room sound system.

thanks. that is for my music room. i am trying to put something else together for my living room, so i will probably be mixing and matching between those systems for years.

The "main system" which I use less and less these days (read: kids) is:

Cambridge Audio 520C CD player ----> or
NAD 533 turntable ---->
NAD 320 Integrated Amp ---->
Tannoy Mx4 floor speakers

In my study, which is where I listen to music mostly if Im at home
laptop --->
Kenwood integrated Receiver/amp ---->
Epos ELS-3 bookshelf speakers

Im getting a new laptop soon, and Im going to get an EMU-0404 to run as an external soundcard at home mainly to use with the DAW stuff I have, but might as well plug it into the chain...

And of course there is the ipod....

I've wanted to hear a pair of those Obelisks for quite a while.

At home I mostly listen to vinyl. Nothing too fancy, a Technics SL-Q3 with a Dennon DL-160 cart through a Parasound Zphono. Adcom GPT-450 pre-amp/tuner and a Hafler amp. Have Fried A/3 speakers. Have a second system down in the basement with another pair of Fried speakers with a vintage Harmon Kardon receiver and an old Technics belt drive table. Have a couple passive subwoofers down there just taking up space until I go crazy someday and get a second amp and external crossover to hook 'em up to one of those plate amps and convert them to active.

I have pretty much phased CDs out and have a hookup on each system where I can plug my iPod in when I want to hear anything I don't have on vinyl. iPod is also the source of choice in the car with just the standard factory stereo.

The Obelisks spoiled me, even though they deserve a better/ bigger room than I have to give them. I use a DL-160 on my Linn, and have used them on the past 4 or so TT's I've owned- giant killers IMO, although I heard Denon has discontinued them. I bet that Zphono is sweet. I use a Blue Circle BC 27 (the two pieces on the shelves below the TT in the pic above. Love it.

Lounge specs are here. When listening to my home collection, it's usually FLAC files on foobar. I've found my receiver's upmixing (specifically Dolby ProLogic II) gives me a cool way to listen to stereo input.

If I'm in a two-channel mood, I'll switch to headphones and have a HeadRoom micro amp and a few different Sennheister models (HD595, HD280Pro). It works both with the PC and my iPhone in the kitchen, where I usually work.

I've never had the money to be an audiophile. The best set-up that I had was a Denon receiver/amp, Sony CD player, Sony direct drive turntable, and AR speakers. (All of which, except the speakers, I inherited from my uncle when he died.)
Now, I have a cheap Sony receiver/amp, a Toshiba CD player, and cheap Sony speakers. IT's either that, or the Aiwa boombox/CD player that I move from room-to-room.

I have a Squeezebox Duet hooked up to a Pioneer receiver in my bedroom (optical digital output) and a Yamaha receiver in the living room (coaxial digital output) - semi-crappy Technics speakers in the bedroom, nicer Energy ones in the living room. My computer is up and running most of the day, so I use that to serve up Apple Lossless files of my entire music collection to the Duet. Occasionally I will use my Sony 5-disc changers to play new CDs that haven't been ripped yet.

Yeah, I messed around with a few different cartridges until I ended up with the Dennon and it is just so much better than anything else I used it is really night and day. The Parasound matches it pretty well and sounds good for a pretty cheap piece. I was messing around with one of those Bellari cheopo tube phono pre amps for a while, mostly because I wanted to try out some tubes and because it has a USB output so I can record to the laptop directly from it. But, the Parasound and its higher output worked better and the Dennon is nice and smooth without the Bellari which kinda does smooth things over.

Speaking of tubes, picked up an old Motorola console form the early 60s with all tube amplification. I'm gonna work on refurbishing the turntable in it and get some replacement tubes to sharpen it up a bit and clean up the cabinet and put a new grill cloth on it so I can use it for a second system to just play 78s on. Will probably take me all summer.

This thread reminds me of what a sad, sorry state my music listening is in. Technology keeps kicking me in my lady junk.

It really puts out!

Lately I use it a lot for the radio too. Listening to baseball or american routes.

There was a vintage audio shop briefly in Winona. After hours I'd walk in and the owner would just be blackout drunk and making deals.
I picked this up for about 35 bucks. He seemed more interested in making sure everyone had good records and stereos than making money. I really miss that guy/place. Dude recently died of a heart attack.

Fuck that's awesome, except the bit where he died. $35 is a steal, and that Sansui looks awesome. My wife would LOVE that thing. My stereo all through highschool was similar vintage, big blue needle dial, I think my parents got it as a wedding present. It had big throw switches.

I think I saw one of those Sansui's at Goodwill the other day. Now I might have to go back to check. My setup is my laptop either through some really old JBL speakers or through some newer Logitech speakers with a separate sub. I need to get a new receiver and some better speakers so I can hook up my turntable. I just put a new head unit in my car too so I can listen to my iPod or iPhone through direct USB, which is nice. I can control from the deck and everything.
