ok. So, I purchased her album after a few listens of some downloaded songs. Is it just me, or does she really make no sense lyrically? I mean it sounds like rambling and rarely makes any cohesive thought. Don't get me wrong, the more I listen to her the more I like her. However, how does one go about placing her writing style into any category? If you ask me, from all my christian education, her words sound very.......postmodern......

My intial decision is that what makes her good, to me, is that the words, syllables, inflections, and all, create a fluidity that makes her vocals more of another instrument than any real attainable meaning.....

???

EDIT: the postmodern comment is intended to be funny.

EDIT II: I really wish I didn't have to explain when I am trying to be funny. :)

The postmodern comment is not funny. It is true. Songs with semiotic references are great.

I really like her lyrics, on top of every other great thing. They're nonsensical enough that even I pay attention.

Most songwriters dont make a lick of sense, and if they do, it's usually boring.

Ok, so let me clarify. It's more the link to my christian education, thereby referring to postmodernism, that I was attempting to make a joke with. Technically, I know it's postmodern, but I really dislike the term sometimes.... eh. Whatever. Joanna Newsom is a weird weird woman.

I'm a big fan of nonsense so long as the lyrics convey the right kind of feeling. Joanna Newsom does this as well as anybody, I think.

I mean, does Dylan always make sense?
