don't be so quick to judge big guy. those that talk about those not doing anything tend to do less themselves.

I was basing this on the number of sAVe TeH gULF oF MEXiCo fr0m TeH OiLZ groups I see on FB. Remember, I live in a gulf state too.

And I'm helping by pointing everyone in the direction of my favorite environmental law firm!

Kinda fitting that after all the rabid "Obama's-a-socialist" rhetoric now everyone's screaming for the guv'mint to save them. Pick one or the other, Murica.

Hey, here's an idea. START DRIVING LESS. We act like it's BP's fault, when they're just meeting the need for our copious consumption.

I don't know if many of the people that cried socialism are actually all that upset with the president on this one. They're the ones that are in support of offshore drilling anyway and see this as "a basic consequence" or "something that happens sometimes".

I think it's the people that wanted more socialism that are upset when the government doesn't come in with their magic oil vacuum to suck away the disaster.

And yes, Magic Oil Vacuum DID slay at Coachella last year.

It's on the shelf, right next to your anal beads.

Even if we drove less and consumed less, the majority of this is BPs fault, IMO. It's a matter of corporate responsibility and accountability, at least more so than my/our consumption practices. Sure, it'd help if we changed our lifestyles, but the gross negligence of the company to actively pursue safety advances is largely to blame.

And, I am just joking about the first comment. I had to say it.

I don't think there's anyway to know yet if it compares to Katrina. Although it appears that very little is being done by anyone so far to clean the mess up.

Good point Rads. Bobby Jindal (Retard) - LA just last year was saying "smaller gov't" because it was a party talking point, and now he's throwing Barry under the bus because he didn't do anything to stop the oil spill? Wouldn't that cost his beloved taxpayers millions? I do agree that the Gummint and BP have been butt-buddies through this and Obama did make the gesture to put a moritorium on off-shore drilling just weeks after opening up the coast to the practice.

Think about it.
What the fuck is the government going to do?
Do you actually think we have semi-annually-trained personnel to handle an oil leak at 5000 ft?

Outside of most people's purposefully uneducated lives, they have no fucking understanding of the engineering needed to carry out such a feat. Most people can't tell you how their refrigerator works. Why is that pertinent? The same rationale of why your opinion regarding the sources and solutions of this situation isn't pertinent.

Sadly, private industry and its ill-prepared methodologies are going to be the saviors
or, more than likely, the strike-five fuck-ups.

There's "crazy" scientific shit going on every day that would blow most people's minds.
And it ain't in the news.

But once some unfamiliar situation hits the news, everyone has an intimate understanding after digesting three-minute sound-bites.
Armchair shitheads.
Clever status updates.
Jam band anthems.

It's a shitty situation that's going to get worse.

In summary: blowhards are the worst (and some cutie-cow-pie will simply quote this line instead of addressing any issue).

I'm genuinely curious, what more could the gov't be doing here? They can't move BP aside to shut off the well - BP/ the oil industry are the only ones with the expertise to do so (every time the gov't does an environmental cleanup they don't actually do the work - they hire an environmental contractor to do it. Here, the only options are BP, Shell, Exxon, etc.).

Yeah, the gov't should have been more forceful vs. BP's under reporting of the flow rate, but what would that have changed?

Are they not laying booms in places where they should be? Is it something else? Is there actually a way to suck up the oil at 1 mile below the surface that no one is trying?

Up to this point, my impression is that we're pretty much up against the limits of what's been done before. Making the response up as we go along is disconcerting, but what other way is there?

Obviously the real failure here is lax permitting & not requiring BP to be better prepared for a disaster scenario- but that's been the state of things for decades now- I don't see how that's Obama's fault. And same thing for the impotency of the federal gov't - it's been that way for a lot longer than Obama's been around. Most gov't agencies (both state & federal) simply don't have the resources to function at the level of A-Team -like response.

From all I have seen the answer here is yes and yes. I might be "armchair outraged" but there are two things - the Saudi Tanker option and the Kevin Costner option that need to either be used, or I need an explanation as to why they are not being used.
