The Sansui is a nice piece, and for 35 bones, definitely a steal.

Fuck that's awesome, except the bit where he died. $35 is a steal, and that Sansui looks awesome. My wife would LOVE that thing. My stereo all through highschool was similar vintage, big blue needle dial, I think my parents got it as a wedding present. It had big throw switches.

Yea, I miss those big, weighted levers- when I worked at a Pacific Stereo back in the day, all the receivers had 'em- Technics, Marantz, Pioneer, etc.

Nowadays, they're just buttons that feel like shit. No tactile pleasure to them at all.

Our service center would always have units that no one would pick up, I bought plenty of them for the cost of the repair & took them home. Over the years, they've gone to good homes.

Awesome. I'm mad I didn't hang on to mine. Don't even remember the brand, though I'd know it if I saw it.

Dad has the same one - got it on R & R in Vietnam.

I didn't have headphones back then. I'd want to hear something, but like, REALLY HEAR IT in that 14 year old sorta way, so I'd tip the two bookshelf speakers that came with it (the kind with the pyramid-pattern stiff foam coverings) together over my head so they pointed straight down at my ears, and turn it up half-way.

I hope the big weighted knobs and switches make a comeback on new gear. Or I'll just keep buying old stuff. If I'm going to switch a record I don't want to press "+" a bunch of times and I sure as hell don't want a remote or a touchscreen. I want big KNOBS.

In h.s. we all had this theory that guitar gear could be judged on the quality of the feel of the control knobs. Loose and sloppy? Throw it back. Firm with detents? Were's my wallet?!

So I picked up a pretty decent Technics reciever a couple days ago. Does anyone have any good (and poor college student level of cheap) recommendations for bookshelf speakers? I really want to be able to start listening to my vinyl again.

If "cheap" means "priced along the lines of a happy meal", be patient and scrounge craigslist and hope for the best. If you can swing just this side of $84, go buy these and don't look back:

Looks like I might be putting some money aside once I get a paycheck or two to get those. I looked at those but didn't read the reviews at first, but now that I did I think I want to get them.

Ryan, you should definitelly trawl through Goodwill, Salvation Army, that quirky store on the other side of Tom's Tabooley from Antone's Records...

You can get some great shit for cheap. Let me know if you want me to go with you sometime.

The wife. I first met her in the mid 1990's. Sure she's no supermodel but I still love her very much and hopefully we will have many more happy years together, especially as I have no money to replace her.

I had gone to a bunch of Goodwills and stuff but I finally lucked out at the one on Lake Austin Blvd. Got some nice KLH speakers for 12 bucks and I just set up everything with my laptop and record player.

Man I do love that Stingray - came very close to doing a one-for-one trade for my integrated a few months back but the deal fell through somehow. BTW have you seen the new Stingray with the built-in iPod dock? Here's my current set-up and listening habits.

Vinyl is played on an Empire 698 sporting a Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge.

Digital music is almost exclusively streamed from my computer these days, wirelessly to a Roku Soundbrisge M1000 network player feeding the digital signal to an Ack dAck battery powered DAC, (though I still have my Sony C222ES SACD Player).

Amplification is curtesy of something called a DK Designs Refernence Mk. II hybrid integrated amp and the speakers are a pair of Martin Logan Vantage.

And when I'm in the mood to digitize my vinyl I do so with a Pioneer PDR-609.

RCA RD900W is how I stream online music from one room to another or even outside from my upstairs computer. RCA discontinued it, but it's damn good and it still pops up on ebay occasionally if you're looking for a wireless solution from getting the music from your pc to other areas of your house.

Yeh, that Stingray iTube has gotten great reviews. From a purely aesthetic perspective, though, both it and the Stingray II have a fatter chassis than the original which, in my eyes, detracts from the sleekness of the original. Hell, I can't afford one anyway.

Still probably the most beautiful vintage tt I've ever seen. Had a line on one in need of complete restoration several months ago, but couldn't come to reasonable terms with guy. One of dese days, though...

I decided the other day that since I'm not currently doing ANYTHING with recording that I'd replace the speakers in my office with my studio monitors so now I've got these guys in here for music listenin':

So far, so stellar actually. Huge upgrade.

I've made hardly any changes to equipment, other than turfing out the Squeezebox I was using on the digital system, replaced by the external DAC I had been using in the main system. The Squeezbox would NEVER find all my music files when I had it catalog them, would just arbitrarily and randomly go brain dead during playback and have to be re-initialized, and would drop the wireless signal, even though it was less than 5 feet from my router. Damn shame, because I actually liked the way it sounded.

In the main room, I ran across a good deal on a nice Italian equipment rack, which let me finally get rid of the cheap POS bookshelf I'd been using for several years. Love it.

Image

And I got one of the kids to pick me up 2 cubes from IKEA in Tampa and bring them up, which got MOST of my vinyl up off the floor, a happy thing for me.

For the price, I've always been happy with them as studio monitors and since they aren't as "flat" as some, I've always suspected they might do well for regular old music playin'.
