Dalen this story will break your heart.

My mom is a counselor at an elementary school. A couple of days ago, a 3rd grade girl came up to her and told her, "My parents canceled by birthday party because my dad is a charter fisherman and we can't afford it now." I think about that girl every time I read/see a story about this.

If BP were smart, they'd take some of their windfall profits from the last five years and establish a small business relief fund. Make no-interest loans against the claims they'll eventually have to pay. If they try to hold their purse strings too tight, Pelosi and Reid are going to strip them bare. Unfortunately, when that happens, none of the money will go where it's needed most.

Interesting opinion piece

Quote:
According to BP, the Maconda oil field in which the Deep Water Horizon was drilling contained an estimated 50 to 100 million barrels of oil. This may seem like a lot, unless one pauses to make a simple calculation. With a world-wide liquid fuel consumption of about 85 million barrels per day, this entire oil field could over its entire life-span provide only 14 to 28 total hours of world energy capability. In the light of the sort of basic math that neither our journalists nor our government sees important enough to share, if they’ve even performed it themselves, this sort of off-shore oil quest seems a bit desperate. This desperation instead looks pathetic and just plain depressing if you take enough time to note that the total amount of oil spilled as of today would have provided enough of the world’s oil supply to last about 11 minutes. Consider the overall loss of marine wild-life and local livelihood lost and perhaps irreparably damaged for a few minutes of energy.

It wouldn't add much to their eventual out of pocket costs, and it would buy them some much-needed goodwill.

The Exxon Valdez didn't crash in an environment where folks' economic hardships had been stoked by anti-corporation rhetoric (the Feds have already launched a criminal investigation). There's blood in the water (amidst the gallons of crude) and BP should be looking for any shark repellant they can find.

Since no one can possibly know what BP's "eventual out of pocket costs" might end up being, it does nothing to answer the question posed. As for the postulated "much-needed goodwill", I'd really like to think you weren't being serious in that remark. The rat bastard head of BP stated publicly today that he "just wants his life back." Good will? Good grief.

There SHOULD be a criminal investigation. Human beings died, and a determination must be made as to whether or not either BP or Transocean were criminally negligent in the construction, operation, or maintenance of the Deepwater Horizon rig.

As for the impact of Exxon Valdez on folks' economic hardships, smart money says that the families of locals who committed suicide in the aftermath of the incident had, and continue to have, no love for Exxon. And the litigation continues. And continues. And continues.

From: http://thelensnola.org/2010/05/24/five-years-after-katrina-the-return-of-disaster-capitalism/

"BP representative Hugh Depland said that while the company wasn’t sure exactly when more workers would be hired, the $239 billion company was spending “a lot of money, time and effort to bring this event to a close.” And to those worried restaurateurs facing rising prices for shrimp and oysters? In the words of fellow BP rep Randy Prescott: “Louisiana isn’t the only place that has shrimp.”"

It's not the only but it provides like 40% of the nation's domestic shrimp. What a stupid thing to say.

Do they have boats in the water that are vacuuming up the oil? Can't they just bend the pipe up with one of their robots to put a kink in it like a garden hose?
