On the trails, yes.

On the street, no - mostly because I don't want to look as much of a dork as Drinky.

Yes, and a gas mask.

Little tidbit--a gas mask doesn't work so well on the ski slope--fogs up way too fast.

Always. I've slammed my head into the ground several times, on both my commute and my off-road rides.

If I didn't wear it, I'd be a veggitubble by now.

I always see really pretty girls on bikes riding around Chicago without helmets and I wonder if they are afraid of messing up their hair or something. Because a shaved head with a jagged scar and brain damage is probably worse than helmet-hair.

Since being told by an EMT, "If you weren't wearing a helmet, you probably wouldn't be here." after a bike accident, I've never been on my bike without it.

I wear mine everytime. I look like a complete goober with it on ( not that I need the helmet to pull off that little trick ) , but I kinda prefer my brains inside my noggin.

People that don't wear 'em are the same jackasses that say they don't wanna quit smoking because "they'll get faaaaaat". Morons.

So, some of you on FB might've seen this post but I'd appreciate it if some more prayers were said--

A friend of mine was in a bicycle accident on Saturday morning. He was not wearing a helmet and had his ipod earbuds in. He swerved and banged into an SUV and fell and hit his head on the pavement. Fractured skull, and brain swelling. He's at Univ. of MD medical center now. He's been up and down. Still has regained consciousness. He suffered a stroke, so clinically he's never going to be the same, and if he regains consciousness and everything can be normalized he'll most definitely live in a home for the rest of his life. The docs have done pretty much everything at this point, with an induced coma being the last resort. His mom has signed a DNR. His gf is a co-worker and friend and she has been bedside talking to him, playing his music (he was a DJ on the side and a teacher at a local high school). Bummer of the situation is that nothing else is wrong. A few millimeters one way and he could've fallen on his shoulder, etc.

Thing is, I believe in miracles and while I'm completely realistic about what is clinically possible, I also know stuff happens that is absolutely undefinable by those same said clinical reports. So, if you pray please send some of that good stuff his way. Wear yr helmet.

I usually wear one, but I never go biking on the street. Where I live, and most of the south as far as I can tell, there aren't bike lanes and most of the roads have little or no shoulder. There's a lot of tension of bikes and cars here in Asheville, a couple of months ago an off duty fireman shot a biker from his car because the biker had his baby with him and apparently the firefighter thought it was unsafe and it pissed him off. Luckily he didn't kill the guy, but he only got a couple of months for it which pissed of all the bikers. I dislike bikers on the streets and wish they would bike some where else, but I don't get pissed off about it.

where are people supposed to ride if not in the streets? most municipalities have banned anyone over 10 or 12 from riding on sidewalks for good reason.

Sorry to hear that FR. I hope a miracle is in the works.

as far as the original question goes...

on flat, paved bike paths - No
on neighborhood streets - No
on dirt trails - Yes
in urban environment - Yes
anywhere with lots of downhill where I'd be going pretty fast - Yes

No ipod earplugs for me anywhere though, that seems much more unsafe than not wearing a helmet.

Woods, Mountains, Parks, etc.

Mostly my position is shaped by the fact that where I live there is little to no shoulder on any of the roads. Also I live a fair distance away from the city so almost all the bikers on the road are there for recreation as opposed to transportation which I have more respect for. There are so many great mountain bike trails here that are under utilized. I am much more understanding of bikers in the city who use it to go places, but I'm not that bothered by any of them, but I do hate the bikers who ride in or near the middle of the road.

Same here, man. That's really awful.

Also, this thread reminds me that I haven't ridden my bike in YEARS. Sad.

yeah, really sorry to hear about this.

i ALWAYS wear a helmet. i couldn't care less what people think.
i was hit by a car at the beginning (20 miles in) of a three day ride from boston to nyc. i flipped over the car and landed on my head. my helmet split down the middle. i ended up needing a little physical therapy on my shoulder but that was it.

Wait, wait. Hang on. What?

"You're endangering your child, asshole -- BLAM! -- oh shit, I almost hit the baby..."

This, four months for shooting a bicyclist in the head.

ASHEVILLE — An Asheville firefighter charged with attempted first-degree murder after witnesses said he shot at a bicyclist, made his first appearance today in Buncombe County District Court.

Charles Alexander Diez, 42, apparently fired at the Asheville man after arguing with him about riding his bike on the busy road with his 3-year-old child in a bike seat behind him, Asheville Police Capt. Tim Splain said.

Diez's case is set to be heard on Aug. 17 in Buncombe County Superior Court.

Diez was driving his car off Interstate 40 at Exit 55 at about 11:24 a.m. Sunday when he saw Alan Ray Simons and his wife riding bikes up the road with Simons' 3-year-old son behind him in a bike seat, he said.

“He decided he needed to tell them he thought it was unsafe that they would do that and have their child out there in an area where they had a lot of traffic,” Splain said.

Diez stopped his car and confronted Simons near 1360 Tunnel Road. When Simons began to walk away, Diez shot at him, Splain said.

The bullet blew a hole through the outer lining of Simons' helmet and went straight through both sides of it, but he was not hit.

Simons and others who witnessed the incident took down Diez's registration plate number and called police.

After consulting with the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office, police charged Diez with one count of attempted first-degree murder.

“A matter of an inch or less in either direction would have meant that bullet could have easily killed Mr. Simons,” Splain said.

Buncombe County Sheriff's deputies found Diez's vehicle at his home on Rowland Road in Swannanoa and arrested him. Diez was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol at the time of the shooting and has no prior criminal record, Splain said.

He has been employed by the Asheville Fire Department since February 1992, according to interim Chief Scott Burnette. Diez has been placed on paid leave during the investigation, Burnette said.

Diez was being held today at the Buncombe County Detention Center with a secured bond set at $500,000

yeah, there are exceptions for everything. and in my city, there are even bike lanes in the middle of the street to act as turning lanes. but i suppose i am pretty lucky to live in such a bike-friendly urban area.

Be careful with this kinda shit. Or don't, whatever. But be aware that bikers don't need to apologize to you for using the road too.. it belongs to both of you equally. Every road. Everywhere, excluding interstates and where posted. That's the law. They are allowed to take up a full car position in the lane if they feel like it, so be thankful (if you want to feel that way) that they don't when they don't. That does NOT absolve bikers of using common sense (please remember this sentence before replying), but by that same token it doesn't absolve cars of it, either. Thus you see most cyclists crouched over on the last 24 inches of shitty, potholed rutted nasty broken glass dead squirrel pavement, trying to be nice and let you by with little more than a tiny swerve of the wheel. WHAT ASSHOLES. A couple of things to remember:

1. Mountain biking and road biking are very, very different activities. This notion you have of "wtf get off my roads and go bike in the woods" is not fair, or realistic. The spandex road bike crowd wants to go do 50-100 miles at 25 mph. The mtn bike crowd wants to go do 5 miles at 5 mph, and the two are very, very different activities.

2. You don't have a crystal ball (I assume), and thus you don't know why someone is biking that day, do you? That guy in spandex might have a shower at work.

3. I'm both people on any given day - the cyclist or the motorist (albeit on 2 wheels), so I feel safe in speaking for both. For the biker, it is cheap healthy transport. For the motorist, it is (at the worst) arriving to your destination about 4 seconds later than you would've -- and generally not even that, you would've made it up at the next red light anyway. And for this we get shot at, run into, yelled at, intentionally hurt.

So, you know, fuck off, sorta. Sorry. I wouldn't bother to reply if I didn't think it might do some good. But seriously, this whole argument of cars being inconvenienced by TOUCHING their brake pedal for 2 seconds, then going around, is fucking stupid. Your every convenience in life is not a god-given right. Be cool. That guy/gal on the bike is just trying to get somewhere and not have to use a fucking car.

And yes I wear a helmet, per Billy G's outlined scenarios.

edit: and yes I carry my baby behind me in a bike trailer, and have done so since she was 2 months old.

I understand all of what you're saying. Did you miss the part where I said I wasn't bothered by it, but that I just didn't like it? Biking to work around where I live isn't a realistic option for the majority of people due to the fact that the actual city, and most of the jobs, is 20-30 minutes away. Part of the reason I don't like it is because every time I see a biker I worry a bit for them, there have been a lot of crashes involving bikers around where I live due to the narrow roads. I'm all for wider lanes and might start riding my bike on them if they were available. Also the atmosphere around here is toxic for bike riders, I've seen people yell at bikers, and even once throw a drink at one.

I'm sorry, but I think this is insane if it isn't an absolute necessity.

Not that I sympathize with that fireman guy or anything. It has very little to do with your capabilities as a cyclist and more to do with cars and other things beyond your control.

I hear you, and I appreciate that you're not an asshole about it. I also see you making assumptions about why bikers are on the road, what else they could/should be doing, that sorta thing. It's understandable but it's still not fair, and I'm juuuust asshole enough to point it out. Looking forward, pretty much the only way that anti-bike culture you're talking about ever gets any better (and roads get bike lanes) is if cyclists DO go out and ride, and be seen, and get yelled at for no reason, and get hit, and still somehow keep on keepin on (to get all hippy about it). Otherwise, what's to talk about? We're a car town. It takes having a local bike culture with clubs and rides and non-profit advocacy groups to get any infrastructure built.

And once it does, then suddenly you're a "bike friendly" town and it looks like there's no problem. I'm not one of those Critical Mass guys who rides taking up the whole lane, and ideally I wouldn't inconvenience anyone in a car ever, but it takes being out there and being seen by cars to turn the tide a little bit. If everyone who's on the fence about riding sees it as "dangerous as fuck" then no new riders start up. Then you're left with craaaaazy stupid shit like kids being driven half a mile to school because their neighborhood roads aren't bike safe (or aren't perceived as such.) This shit comes back to haunt you too. Everytime you see some dude's spandex-covered butthole wagging in front of you on the road, console yourself that he'd otherwise be one more fucking car in traffic.
