I've seen these HBO shows and all are decent enough to give a try if one strikes your interest:

Eastbound and Down
Bored to Death
Hung
True Blood

i mightily second rescue me and the shield.
the other show i'd throw out here is nurse jackie. it's not a chic show. it's dark humor and moral compasses shift constantly.
also, edie falco is brilliant.

I just started on The Shield recently. I enjoy Vic's pragmatism.

I wish this was available in the US:

Its pretty hilarious.

Speaking of BBC comedies:

This is definitely worth a netflix queue position.

Freaks and Geeks is great. I think most people should watch that.

I enjoyed Firefly, but it's kinda spotty. I'd be surprised if it's something billy g would like.

Same here; I've heard nothing but praise for it. I will prob check it out later this summer.

I like Breaking Bad and would definitely recommend it. It doesn't seem like a premise that they will be able to effectively stretch across too many more seasons but I like it so far.

Huh, that's pretty surprising.

Spaced and Peep Show would probably be in a top 5 of all time favorite comedies.

OK, maybe I should check these out. I was ready to dismiss just based on how I hate most recent comedys other than Californication.

This show jumped the shark with me with the MILF weed episode or whatever it was called. Kevin Nealon kept me watching for a little while longer but it got too awful to bother.

yeah, i think it's worth seeing, but not completing. and i'm one of those people who sticks with shows that i've invested in. (i even still tivo "csi" and "the office" just because i've been into them for so long and yet they're so bad now.) but that one was just a nosedive.

I'll throw in another vote for Peep Show...those guys are amazing. That Mitchell and Webb Look is one of the best sketch comedy shows ever.

Some others:

SCTV
The League Of Gentlemen
The Addams Family
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Lovejoy
Animaniacs
Police Squad

I'll second (or whatever) Peep Show, Spaced, Deadwood.

Northern Exposure is one of my favorite shows.

I like John from Cincinnatti but can see how a lot of people wouldn't. Rome is also worth a watch if you like that stuff (I've only seen season 1).

Justified is good but it's not on dvd yet.

Assuming you've seen The Sopranos...

Yes, Lovejoy is good. And, while not a series per se, and you've probably seen it anyway, Masterpiece Theater's I, Claudius is still far and away the best thing I've ever seen on television.

I'm guessing you've watched Homicide since you're a fan of the Wire, but that deserves a mention.

I'll throw in Sealab 2021 for laughs.

Second Freaks and Geeks and Spaced

rescue me is pretty good but never kept up on it. like The Shield, it bugged me when there was no FX HD channel.

No idea if you're interested at all in stepping outside the realm of sitcoms and dramas, but if so, Branowski's Ascent of Man and Connections series are both exceptional.

I haven't seen 99% of any of these.

I'm just not a t.v. or movie guy, but over the years I've watched some 24 with my wife, and enjoyed it.

You have to completely suspend disbelief, but it's entertaining.
