What are you favorite drinks for when it gets hot?

It used to be gin and tonics like crazy, but I haven't stocked gin much since the move here four years ago.

Lot of whiskey and ginger ale, or whiskey and lemonade.

How about you?

Last week I was sipping on Raspberry Lemonade and vodka. I also turn up the Margarita intake during warm months.

I typically switch to Hefeweizen, American wheat, Belgian wit and American white ales during the summer. Will also drink more Pacifico, Red Stripe "warm weather" vibe beers

still attempting to craft the perfect Old Fashioned. but this past week have moved into Tom Collins territory -- really the perfect summertime drink. might try a John Collins tonight.

Mostly just stick with beer, something lighter than my usual faves when it is hot. I keep some Modelo Especial on hand most of the time when it's stupid hot outside.

However, have been embracing my feminine side with a delicious pink fluffy drink lately.

Just chunk up some watermelon, toss it in a blender with some ice cubes, a generous amount of vodka and a spoon or two of sugar and blend. Cool, refreshing delicious. Really super easy to knock back a shit ton of vodka without noticing too so be careful.

I don't have a summer drink and a winter drink, probably because the winters aren't that much colder than the summers here and also because vodka, rocks is a good summer and winter drink.

I drink less heavy red wine in the summer heat though and more lager/pilsner/white ale and more white wine. Vinho Verde is probably the only thing I only drink in the summer and I don't drink it that much but its real goog in the summer.

Always wine with dinner; beer out at the pool (I'm a Pilsner guy); Mt Gay Rum & Tonic at dusk...

For me, G&T is a year-round drink but it's a good one for summer. I also drink margaritas a bit more and occasionally down a mojito if I really feel like troubling myself.

Beer-wise the Belgian wheats get more attention.

As for wine, I'm not opposed to white wine in the summer like I am in the winter so I'll have that when I don't like the beer options and it's too hot for red.

The usuals, light beer, hefeweizens. Bell's Oberon is a staple. If I'm outdoors, I enjoy a frozen margarita vs my normal on the rocks due to the melt factor.

Also this, on the rocks, with a splash of lemonade:

Add a deck and a light breeze.

from a friend of mine who's living in your neck of the woods, laura.

---

Mario Iriarte, owner of Dali, did an interview in the Boston Globe last summer. The recipe that was given was "adapted" from Dalí's recipe, but having had it so often, I came up with what I think is a very good copy of it. I've made it several times for gatherings, and I never seem to make enough.

I've also included a few notes that Mario said in the article.

Dalí's Sangria

Serves 10

2 bottles Spanish rioja wine
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brandy
1 oz Triple Sec
1 literclub soda -- or less
2 cups orange juice
2 oranges -- cut into eighths and each eighth cut in half

Make this in a big container and mix well to dissolve the sugar. You can refrigerate it probably up to a week, pouring over ice to serve. Dalí's bartenders usually tops the small and large pitchers off with another good-sized sploosh of red wine.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From 8/1/01 Boston Globe article on sangria...
The red wine sangria served at Dalí begins with an inexpensive dry red Spanish table wine, Vina Borgia, which is mixed with regular Spanish brandy and an orange brandy. Iriarte says that he uses Spanish ingredients "because we want the soul of it be Spanish."
The fruit and brandy are combined with sugar and orange juice and allowed to sit for at the least 24 hours for the flavors to mellow. "It's important to let it stand," Iriarte says.
His sangria has a fuller, sweeter flavor than red wine sangrias made without the orange brandy. And lacking citrus fruits, the drink is less tart than other variations. The intense sweetness is lightened with a splash of sparkling water, which should be added after the sangria has been poured over ice, immediately before serving. "To bring alive the dormant juices," according to Iriarte.
A few lessons learned during testing: when making the red wine sangria, use a bottle of red wine (as Dalí's Iriarte does) but if the mixture seems excessively sweet, add another half bottle or so, and let it rest another 24 hours.
Also, i've never had an old fashioned, or a tom collins, and certainly not a john collins... haven't even heard of that. I know i could google it, but be a pal and educate me.
Something I discovered this past weekend...
+ = :rockbanana:
Equal parts each in a glass. Completely refreshing and tastes like an alcoholic orange smoothie.
right now, for my old fashioneds, i muddle one sugar cube, 3 dashes angostura bitters + half an orange wheel. i found that leaving the muddled remains in there left my drink too sweet for my liking, so i've taken out the orange carcass and left all the juices -- this seems to have taken the perfect amount of sugar along with it. fill glass with ice and then add 2.5 oz of rye. i drizzle a little bit of luxardo marischino cherry juice and then stir well. throw in one of those cherries and an orange wedge. a lot of work, but worth it.
tom collins = fill cocktail shaker 2/3 ice + 2 oz gin + 1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice + 1 tbsp simple syrup. shake well. strain into ice filled glass. add ~ 4-5 oz club soda. garnish with lemon wedge.
john collins = subbing out gin for bourbon + the lemon garnish for orange/marischino garnish. everything else stays the same.
now i need to try an OF with the batch of simple syrup i made.
