Abita - Mixed 12 Pack (Amber Ale already reviewed)
Image
Jockamo IPA - It's ok, but not really much to get into. It doesn't have a strong body, nor a strong enough hop buildup to be an american IPA. In this 12 pack it's better than average, but .. meh. C+
Turbodog - Whew! Thank fucking god. This is still really good, and in this 12 pack it's head and shoulders above everything else, almost like it comes from a different brewery. Finally, some flavor! This is what Newcastle should taste like (instead of flat pepsi). A dark ale with enough balls to be engaging, but not so much that you can't pound 4 or 5. A-
Red Ale - ZZzzzzzzzzzzz D-
Purple Haze - This has not aged well. It's kinda watery, light on malt body, and heavyish on raspberry "flavoring." D
Restoration Pale Ale - The darkhorse of the box, for sure. I expected Turbodog to be good, and the rest put me to sleep, but this was a nice little beer! Great balance, actual body, crisp but contained little hop bite, excellent hot weather sippin' beer. A-

I feel like Abita mostly makes beers that are only good for pounding out in 97 degree heat in full sunlight, where you're racing to get the beer down before it's piss warm.

The Bruery - Black Orchard
Image

I love this brewery, generally. So far I've really dug what I've had, but this was also really boring. The label teased me with lots of interesting ingredients, and what I got was a plain dark wheat beer. They tried, I guess, but they low-balled the special stuff. B-

Duchy Originals - Organic English Ale
Image

Had this again with saturday bbq. I've had one before, but I think I forgot to review it. Apologies if I'm doublin' up. This is clean, really really refreshing, and (if I may be blunt) much too good to be english beer. No wierd stink to the hops, no flat boring yeast, nothing like that. It's almost german lager-worthy: something I would love to have 2 or 3 of outdoors somewhere in nice weather. Goes great with pulled pork, that much is for goddam sure. B+

Allagash - Fluxus 2009
Image

The wife picked this up for me. Made with sweet potatoes and black pepper. ...also $18 a bottle. What you get for all that trouble is a normal, plain belgian with slightly darker roasted malt. So a belgian amber, then. No other flavors here whatsoever -- no sweet potato, no black pepper, nothing but a regular belgian amber with MAYBE a little bit of bitterness from something (the pepper corns?) and of course hints of semen. -shrug- Given the price and the braggin' on the label, I have to give this a C+, not because it's bad, but because it swings HARD and struggles to get to first.

Nøgne - Imperial DunkelWit
Image
Image

From Norway, with interesting label art, and they talk a good game on the back so I had to dig in. The crazy little grocery / bbq place carries 4 or 5 from them now, so I'll eventually get through all of them. 10% content, and it's stealthy because this beer is SWEET. Not frat-boy "sweeet" but like sugary sweet. It wasn't over the top but it was close. I could taste everything in it, which was a good surprise after the Bruery and Allagash experiences up there, but it still isn't a knockout. B.

Just another message board for the most part, but you can review beers along the way. Lots of good info and lists for fellow beer tickers. Good place to get into trading as well.

The Alstrom Bros. who run the site are assholey though.

I had some Sweetwater Road Trip over the weekend. It was "ok". Femdisco loved it. It was like advertised, a Pilsener/Pale Ale mix.

Haha, I asked that a page ago.

I had this with my burritos for dinner:

Not bad. Brown sugar and honey...sure. Taste lingered and left a nice after-taste. I was surprised that it didn't leave a heavier feeling after finishing the bottle.

Brewing in casks in a trend right now. Generally, I really like the taste of beers that are cask brewed, especially when brewed in former liquor barrels. Unfortunately, this was just kinda average.

Red Hook doesn't seem capable of more than OK-ness.

I've had a few of these over the last couple of days:

Easiest comparison is a spicy white ale like Allagash Brew's version (which I've gone on record here to say I love) or a Flying Dog Garde Dog

Just picked up some of this for the game tonight:
Image
I'm both intrigued and a little grossed out by "wet hops"

been drinking a lot of Moretti Rossi lately. Delicious. With the coming heat, though, it might be time to shift back to bourbon.

Last night I had the following on draft:

Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere
Image
http://www.sierranevada.com/beers/harvest_southern.html
Quote:
Our newest addition to our Harvest family is Southern Hemisphere Harvest. This is the first time we know of that an American brewer has put out a beer with fresh-picked hops from the southern hemisphere. The inaugural ale will debut in late April and will feature fresh Pacific Hallertau, New Zealand Motueka and New Zealand Southern Cross hops, all from New Zealand.

Like our Celebration Ale, the fresh hops in this beer are dried right after being picked then shipped immediately to Chico for brewing so that they retain their peak aromatics and flavors. To ensure the freshest hops possible, we went to the added expense of flying these hops from New Zealand to Chico so we could brew with them the week after they were picked.

Plank - Bavarian Light Wheat Bock

Image
Great compliment to Saturday BBQ at the usual place. Crisp, light, interesting, and ...affectionately stodgey and old fashioned in the good way that only old german breweries seem to be able to do. It's not complicated or WOW HOLY SHIT exciting but it's so timeless and well-made. Makes you realize how busy most american beers are, which is fine sometimes but it's nice to dial it back once in awhile.

Stone - Cali Belgique IPA
Image
These guys can't seem to get out of their own way. It's not a bad beer, but it's pricey and confused. Truth in advertising - it's kindof an IPA with a belgian yeast flavor. ...shrug.

Long Trail - Double IPA
Image
This is not a brewery capable of greatness, but neither do they have flat-out clunkers like Magic Hat (shudder). They're nice guys, their setup is beautiful, they know their place, and I fucking love to support them. This was a solid effort, fwiw, and a fucking bargain compared to anything by Stone costing twice as much.

It really is a little better when it's fresh. It doesn't turn into an amazing beer, but it's a little better and certainly serviceable.

So incredibly close to Guinness. Fucking great when you've worked your ass off, the beer is cold and fresh, and there's a band playing the traditionals in the corner. This picture gives me a semi.

I watched that guy down 6 tall Guinness bottles in the 2 hours I sat there. I counted. He showed zero signs of intoxication.

Bulmers Cider, fishing villiage of Dunmore East, IRE

A decent cider, blah blah blah --That could've been a glass of luke warm piss and I would barely have noticed, in that setting. Spectacular weather, a short 10 mile bike ride to get back to the hotel, all the time in the world, nothing to do, pockets flush with other peoples cash...

I don't get it

Just that so many breweries pump out a lot of Meh beers.

I am damn glad I can get Bell's down here now, and Red Seal. Two of my favorites.

I have kind of realized that I am over trying a lot of new and different beers, and pretty much just really like a well made, cold as fuck, Pale Ale.

I did have a Rogue Dirtoir Black Lager. Some kind of first growth thing. It was pretty tasty. A little dark for a 100 degree Alabama day, but I consistently enjoy Rogue product. (How many weekends in Athens started out with two bombers of Dead Guy?)
