The Stones thread got me thinking about this one. Just asking which is the better between these two, not (necessarily) insinuating these are the two best of all time.

So not even close that the question itself is retarded.

And whoever voted for the Floyd track needs a good bootfucking.

I always found the warbling in the PF song highly annoying.

I haven't heard Great Gig in the Sky in a very very very long time. I seem to remember the female vocals sounding like the singer was screaming from the pain of having her genitals mutilated.

Looking over Merry Clayton's credits, I'm surprised how many things I own that she sings on:

The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed (1969)
Neil Young - S/T (1969)
Leon Russell - S/T (1970)
Jesse Ed Davis - S/T (1971)
John Simon - John Simon's Album (1971)
Kate Taylor - Sister Kate (1971)
Carole King - Tapestry (1971)
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street (1972)
Jesse Ed Davis - Ululu (1972)
Grin - Gone Crazy (1974)
Taj Mahal - Mo Roots (1974)
Leon Ware - Musical Massage (1976)
Hoyt Axton - Less than the Song/Life Machine

Probably some Ray Charles too but i don't see that in her AMG credits.

I don't remember much about that PF song but that probably says enough.

I don't think that Pink Floyd song has dated very well (or maybe it always sounded cheesy), but for what it is, it's a good vocal performance. I mean, she did what was asked of her, and I'm not sure what would have been better.

"Gimme Shelter" is naturally the better song, but I think the vocals in that are a different animal entirely. The vocals on "Great Gig in the Sky" are a long improvisation that is front and center in the song while the vocals on "Gimme Shelter" are more woven into the melody and the song structure and function a lot like another instrument in the mix. It's a key instrument, though, as the parts of that song I recall the most readily are Clayton's vocals.

I'm not really sure how you compare the two other than just preferring one song over another, but that's obviously enough for most you on a board full of Pink Floyd haters and Stones worshipers.

that PF part starts off alright, but then she veers off into horny-feral-cat territory at the end

i can't recall the stones track, but i'm sure it's better than the floyd

This line made the otherwise painful experience of posting this universally maligned poll totally worthwhile. Thanks, JN!
