Who are some drummers that you just love listening to? They don't have to be the best or most technical, but drummers that really add something to the mix that keeps you interested.

Here are a couple that stand out for me:

Dave Lombardo - Slayer
Philip Peeples - Old 97s
David King - Love Cars
Dave Grohl - Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Probot

If I were in high school, the standard obvious answer given would be Neal Peart of RUSH.

I don't have a favorite drummer.

John MacIntyre (Tortise/The Sea & Cake)
Ringo Starr (say what you will about his chops, he has a style all his own. Try to imagine "She Said, She Said" without his skittering part or "Tomorrow Never Knows". I mean, come on, he was the drummer for the freqaking BEATLES, man!)
Keith Moon
John Bonham
Elvin Jones
Jody Stephens (Big Star... vastly underrated)

David Kling (Hop On Pop... and the only drummer I ever want to play with for the rest of my life)

too lazy to look up names, but:

dude from the Walkmen. i can't think of too many other drummers going right now who do what he does.
jerry macdonald from the Wrens. esp. on Secaucus, where he had more time to be a part of things. and he's a super swell guy.
ringo! no really, i've been paying a lot more attention to his contributions lately and damn if he doesn't embody the less-is-more principle. i wonder how much of that was the influence of paul and george martin, but nevertheless.
todd trainer. man that guy can hit...
of course bonham and moon...

Damn. Beat me to it. I really enjoy listening to Jody Stephens.

Also, I'll take:

Stewart Copeland
Ginger Baker
Charlie Watts (And I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they bangin' like a-Charlie Watts)
Grant Hart

And for a singing drummer, gimme Levon Helm.

these are the guys who made me want to play drums:
jimmy chamberlain (smashing pumpkins) ive always loved how although he plays in a rock band, he manages to infuse so much jazz in his style
dave grohl (nirvana, foo fighters) my style probably emulates his the most. that being beat the hell out of your skins
jon bonham (led zeppelin) i really got into led zeppelin when i was younger, and he was probably the single most important person that led to me playing drums
topper headon (the clash) bar none, the greatest punk drummer ever. he could take anything joe strummer or mick jones threw at him and came up roses every time
lars ulrich (metallica) quite simply, the virtuoso. too much talent for his own damn good.

I lot of my favorites have already been mentioned. Just to name a couple of others:

I always thought Roger Taylor was a pretty good drummer.

Kenny Aronoff is a fun drummer to watch

You guys do realize that taylor hawkins is the drummer for the foo fighters (excepting the first album) and is at least as good as dave grohl...Right?

yeah, he probably is, but he never really gets a chance to show it. ive heard some good things from the newest album that show hes a pretty good drummer, but hes got some more convincing to do with me to convince me hes as good as dave grohl.

Agree with Peeples (Old 97's) - he really brings a distinct sound to every song
Also, I think Elliott Smith was a great drummer

No one here loves the Clash more than I do. My take on Topper differs day to day. On the one hand, the fact that he wasn't actually a fan of punk and learned to play by listening to other styles of music served him well when Joe and Mick threw all kinds of shit at him. He was definitely versatile

On the other hand, some Clash songs would have been better served if someone was behind the kit who could just bang the shit out of them.

Topper WAS the Clash drummer, but, I always liked Terry Chimes and believe it or not Peter Howard(Clash Mark II) too.

Joe had always said that the Clash died when Topper was sacked. Who am I to argue?

Getting me going on the Clash is a bad thing.

Bruce Gary ( The Knack ) . Scoff if you want, but the drumming on Get The Knack is borderline psychotic.

Yo Northern Soul! Why no love from you for Matt Cameron? As much as i love Grohl, even he would admit that he is nothing more than a cheap jack Cameron imitator. :splode:

damn it! thanks konstantin, i totally forgot about him. if not for keith moon, he would have easily been the best drummer of the 60s. sorry yail, i guess i dont share your love of matt cameron. ive never really thought that he was more than just a better than average drummer. i was very surprised when he joined pearl jam, and ive tried to change my opinion of him since eddie vedder and the rest of them must have seen something in him, but havent been able to do it.

edit: damn it! the more i think about it the more i add. another to add to the list would be maureen tucker. she was meg white before meg white was meg white.

Undestood; its not worth it to argue the finer points but if you do have curiosity i would direct you to check out some live pearl jam and in particular one of their concert videos; dude just rips.

This is a TOTAL high school homeroom argument. Hi-larious

Yeah, I thought about putting Mitch Mitchell on there, but just figured someone else would mention him. I don't know why that matters, though. He was amazing.

Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) - He pretty much makes that band for me. Really nice textural stuff.
Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt) - There are other crazy all-over-the-place drummers around (like the dude from Hella), but this guy is actually fun to listen to.
Jaki Leibezeit (Can) - One of my favorite drummers ever.
Joey Baron (Masada, Naked City, etc.)
John Convertino (Calexico)

I like a lot of other ones mentioned here, too (Lombardo, Moon, Bonham, MacIntyre, Matt Barrick from the Walkmen).

I suck at keeping track of jazz drummers, but that's a whole different dicussion probably.
