Also, what's with that "magic spray"? I've many a cramp in my playing day, and not once did I have a spray applied. Don't know what any spray could do to a cramp anyway. Topical muscle relaxer?

I think that more than anything, this is what turns American fans off to soccer. All of the obvious diving, especially by the best players.

I'm going to disagree. I think its a combination that:

a) Most Americans never played soccer and don't understand the rules
b) Most Americans can't relate to cheering for players/teams they don't know other than nationalistic pride.

This is changing, but slowly. Even though we have the MLS, soccer isn't enough on our national radar to consider it anything more than a fringe sport. Sure, tons of kids are playing it year after year, but people like my dad could care less. We don't have squads from each town/city that play professionally like other countries.

Also, I'd like to point out that "dives" are part of every sport. Baseball has the 15-day DL, football has kickers who sell hits, etc.

Also, we're ego-maniacs. If our team doesn't have at least a shot at a championship, or is dominant in some way, we tend to lose interest...fast.

Plenty of U.S. kids play soccer, and the basic rules are immediately obvious to even casual observers, so I don't think this carries any weight.

People whip themselves into a frenzy for entirely arbitrary groupings of people for other sports. Also, basically every soccer fan supports the team they do out of nationalism/localism. It's not that we're unique in needing that to get excited, it's that U.S. soccer is mired in obscurity, so every big soccer fan in the U.S. is a fan of Man U. or some other Premier League team. So really, the few fans we have are a lot less nationalistic in our support of soccer (unless you consider that those fans usually support those teams because they drink with other fans of those teams who are actually nationals).

But the real real answer is that people in the U.S. have basically only ever cared about sports we invented.

I really don't give as shit if more Americans don't go crazy for soccer anymore. I mean, it's a big country, plenty of room for more sports and we keep getting more Mexicans around and it'll be plenty popular enough to keep things going.

That said, some pretty boring games so far. Germany is the onyl team that has looked worth a damn so far, outside some flashed from Argentina. Brazil may be fun to watch demolish North Korea, but with Dunga in charge they may just settle for winning every game 1-0.

I said that about the kids in the second paragraph. Its a changing outlook in this country. I don't know if I agree that their immediately obvious. The basic premise of kicking the ball into the goal, sure. But the various rules like offsides, etc? I think some of that isn't as obvious.

The point is, how many people that watched the US/England game could name any of the players? Based on the numbers, way more than rabid fans watched. This means that most of the viewers in the US were simply watching because of the hype and because it was a US team. This sets us apart from other countries. True, other countries have the same nationalistic pride, but they can name the players, and follow them. Think of it this way--if there was a world cup of American rules football, and the US fielded a team we'd be in the know. However, if say, Spain fielded a team they probably would just be cheering for the team based on the fact that the team was from Spain.

I disagree. You can get a yellow card for an obvious dive. What other sport does that happen? How great it would be if they gave technical fouls for flops in basketball?

I think Americans don't like soccer because they equate low scoring with boring and because we suck at it.

Ok I have to ignore this thread soon because I am tivoing the brazil game to watch after work.

And, I am by no means an expert on soccer. I enjoy it casually, so perhaps I'm speaking from a sphere of influence that I live.

People now watch the World Cup like they do the Olympics. They don't really give a crap about the game or know about the players, they just root for their country and know it is supposed to be some big deal. I mean really, how many people really could name 2 world class sprinters 2 years before the Olympics? Yet, everyone tunes in.

I'm clearly no expert on the sport. I was just commenting on the fact that he seemed to get breathed on and he went down. The broadcast guys were all over him as well.

Maybe he's just an easy target because the US media has decided that he's one of the faces they are going to us to sell the World Cup this go 'round. Seems like he's on all the mags right now.

Yeah, I immediately thought of basketball. But the dives in soccer are especially dramatic.

I'm sure there are myriad reasons why Americans aren't into soccer, but it is interesting to me that that still hasn't changed much after so many Americans from the past few generations played soccer as kids. When kids who play it get older, they mostly seem to move into other sports because those are more popular, especially on the college level.

I think its as simple as the fact that the best games seem to be on at weird times because they're taking place in Europe. It's a matter of convenience.

Dude, it is in South Africa this time.
Also, fuck Brazil, they came to play for roughly 15 minutes and score two goals on something like 31 shots before giving up a late goal to one of the worst teams of the tournament.
Group of Death, became Group of bored to death for much of the day.

Gotcha
Most Champs League and Premier League games are played at 1:00pm and 3:00pm on week days here, and on Saturday/Sunday mornings at around 8:00am.

I used to get up at 7 or 8 on Sunday mornings to watch the Celtic matches with my buddy. Brutal. He said they moved the matches to early in the afternoon (in Scotland) so the fans would have less time to consume before.

According to the Nielsen ratings, tv viewership for this event here in the US is up 80% so far.
The US/England match on ABC drew 13 million viewers, and that doesn't include those watching the spanish language broadcast on Univision.
The NBA Finals have been drawing about 9 million, while the final Stanley Cup game drew 4.25 in primetime.

More or less stating that we've came a long way from leather helmets and a rugby ball, yet still have some rather ridiculous rules in our game.
I'd say we add more of them each year to the detriment of play.

i think soccer should embrace more of hockey's rules.

penalties range from useless (a free kick in your own half of the field) to epic (a guy gone for the whole game with no replacement player) with not nearly enough middle ground. The refs have to make split second HUGE decisions, and that puts way too much value on the refs. All sports have their officiating issues, but I feel like soccer's could be improved really easily without altering the flow of the game.

Question for the novice:

Do you play everyone in your group once and then the top 2 advance correct?

Is it single elimination after that?
