The Iron Giant

Yeah, it is a kids' movie... but in the same way that E.T. is a kids' movie. And it's got a similar storyline.

Giant robot from space crashes on Earth and befrends lonely little boy. They both learn life lessons whle fleeing from military/government agencies, as does the entire town.

But it is so much more.

Directed by Brad Bird (I think he did The Incredibles, too) and set in small-town Maine. (Phil, you listening?)

It is a wonderful movie and I recommend it for all y'all... especially those of you with kids.

Bird is amazing. The kids and I watched both the Incredibles and The Iron Giant over the weekend. Those movies are so far above most other animated films in character complexity, attention to detail, storyline and reasons for being made as to make the others look pretty foolish.

I loved Iron Giant but was pretty dissappointed in the Incredibles. Don't get me wrong it's better than most, but for me it pales in comparison to other Pixar films.

I think the depiction of midlife disillusionment was perfectly pulled off and convincing. The Bob character was fully realized and transcended being a cartoon.

Also, things like hair texture and water consistency in this film were better done than ever in the history of animation. Those technical achievements alone make this a remarkable film, but there are are also great touches like the realism put into the children's personalities. My kids are A LOT like them, actually, except for the super powers bit. And the supporting cast - the boss made to look like William H. Macy and the designer made to look like Linda Hunt -- very clever.

The only weak part was the actual villian. That was predictable kids-movie stuff.

yeah, great movie. cartoon network used to show it for 24 hours over some holiday weekend (probably thanksgiving) and i'd watch it a few times. i read an interview with brad bird a few years ago that the studio had no idea how to market it and that's why it didn't do well.

Spoon, I don't disagree one bit with your points, but in the end I just didn't enjoy it as much. I found myself bored with it, especially at the end when the family was fighting the villian. I think intellectually it works, but to me it didn't he on all levels like other Pixar movies have done for me.

I would go so far as to say The Iron Giant just may be the greatest kids movie of all time.

The Iron Giant is very cool.
I'm hearing alot of disappointing things about The Incredibles.

You know, I'm not sure what the greatest kids movie of all time is, but it is not The Iron Giant.

Robots is better than the Incredibles. The latter just seemed too long.

Yeah, in retrospect, I probably got a tad carried away. The original Wonka is the greatest kids movie of all time.

This thread got totally derailed into Bizarro Land.

Let's get back to reality:

The Iron Giant is fantastic. It may not be the best kids movie ever, but it's up there.

The Incredibles is also great. I think it's the best Pixar movie so far, but I can certainly see how others would disagree. Finding Nemo and even the original Toy Story are some of the best kids entertainment you'll ever come across, animated or otherwise.

Robots was beautiful, but it was utterly formulaic and mostly empty as far as story and characterization. I enjoyed it more than enough to recommend that people go see it, but the key to my enjoyment was entirely in the movie's visuals and excellent pacing. There's not much underneath the surface besides excellent craftsmanship from the artists involved. Don't compare it to The Incredibles.

Brad Bird was one of the original directors on The Simpsons. I think quite a few of those guys jumped ship to Pixar.

Haven't seen Iron Giant (have heard great things though), Incredibles was awesome, but I must ask...

has anyone seen Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior?

I saw it last week and I'm crazy about it. I wish I could do incredible flying knees and elbow bad guys on the tops of their heads.

Iron Giant is one of my favourite films! And, like the sentimental fool that I am, I bawled at the end. I heard long ago that there was supposed to be an Iron Giant II, but never heard anything more.
