Yes, the latest assault on America's waistline comes in the form of Friendly's recently launched Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt. Move over, Double Down, there's a new "something with far more calories than bread as a bun" sandwich in town.

Friendly's gastronomical innovation is not without precedent. The Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt appears to be inspired by similar "Fatty Melts" and "Chubby Melts" that have been served in the South for a few years now (source), as well as the Midwest.

What's the nutritional content of the culinary monstrosity? According to the Friendly's site (PDF):

1500 Calories
870 Fat Calories
79g Total Fat
38g Saturated Fat
180g Cholesterol
2090mg Sodium
101g Carbs
9g Dietary Fiber
4g Sugar
54g Protein

They've had that at the Vortex in ATL for years.

I hate american cheese or I'd fuck this sandwich.

I loved Friendly's grilled cheese sandwiches as a kid.

I used to tear these up in the summertime when I was a kid.

They just built one here. Growing up there were 2 in my hometown. One in the mall, and an autonomous one. The mall one was incredible for mid-mall Fribbles.

I'm assuming that calorie count doesn't include washing it down with a Fribble and having a Reese Pieces Sundae for desert.

I hate patty melts, I don't care if you're cramming a couple of grilled cheeses into it.

This is a clear line of delineation between you, a Canadian, and us as Southerners.

From Alligator Belts to Patty Melts, I be that smoothest n*gga, so you tell me that Atlanta don't be pullin them triggers?

It's stupid because it's everything I like with a slight variation, but as a package it just never quite makes it worthwhile for all the mess. Like meat pies, another bottom-dwelling dish.

I just said that to someone on FB. You know that isn't the ceiling. There's going to be 2-3 Coke refills, and fries on the side. Plus, it probably does come with a sundae.

You my friend, need a Waffle House Patty Melt, dipped in mustard.

Kind of, but not really. Friendly's is an ice cream joint that sells food. Steak and shake only has shakes (in addition to the food).

We ate at a Friendly's once on a road trip, and the wife and I both laughed out loud when they set the enormous plates down. The table groaned audibly.

So it's like a cross between Dairy Queen and Steak N Shake?

Hm, never mind.

TJ is confusing you. Its a stab at diner nostalgia with comfort foods. Most Friendly's are 90% booth sitdown restaurant seating, and 10% ice cream take-out. Its mostly a burger and fries style place. They used to be aimed more at ice cream, but recently they've been focusing more on their "melts" and the like.

Oh, OK.

That watermelon thing looks good to me for some reason.

And how/why does anyone hate patty melts? They're not my favorite thing, but come on.

Oh wait, I forgot. No matter what it is, someone here hates it.

That's good. That's comforting.

I keep forgetting I added that "s" to my name.

The watermelon thing is amazing. It breaks down like this:

green outer=lime
white inner=lemon
red=watermelon
seeds=choc chips

About ten years ago, I found myself back east for a wedding within 1 hour drive of a small town I lived in for ten years as a kid. I had some free time the day after the wedding before my flight so I took a little nostalgia tour including a stop at a friendlies for lunch. I was very hungover though and ending up vomiting up a patty melt and a large fribble in the parking lot after lunch. Good times.
