Exactly. This is what we avoided against Algeria at the end and we continued to produce chances in that one, eventually paying off. I wonder how much fatigue played into that.

I can totally see Ghana beating Uruguay.

I don't, I don't even expect them to score on Uruguay.
Uruguay has two quality strikers who are finding the back of the net with their shots.
They play excellent defense, don't generally give up easy goals or make defensive mistakes, although they had one or two today and they are exceedingly patient during their offensive possessions.
The US looked listless at the start of the game, made two mental/strategic errors on defense that led to easy goals and still had a chance to win the game. I don't see how Ghana can play the way they did against the US in the 2nd half and pull out a win, but I could be wrong.

Taking off Altidore completely backfired.

He might not be a top class goal scorer but he is big, strong, fast and works hard. With someone like that on the field even if they aren't a huge goal threat themselves they do create spaces that deeper lying players can run into and gives wide players the opportunity to come inside.

Gomez was completely immobile, didn't make any spaces and the game passed him by. The US threat was completely blunted by that substitution until the very end when they threw everyone forward.

England is getting killed early 2-0.
I was expecting a scoreless draw that went to a PK shootout.

Edit:
As soon as I posted this, England scored twice in rapid succession, but only one of the goals got counted.
It has been a fucking great game so far.

Yep. It was a gamble... and it was absolutely the wrong thing.

England can win this, how odd. Talent is talent I guess.

Hilariously inept performance by England.

John Terry gave one of the worst defensive displays I've ever seen.

Wayne Rooney, best player in the world? Where do these ideas come from?

It would have been nice to have witnessed a 9-4 game, with all those great shot attempts barely missing their mark.

As for Altidore, Did he really have much left in the tank to contribute? He looked dead tired or injured as he left the pitch. I think they probably should have brought in Buddle for him, but we certainly could have used that extra sub we lost with the decision to start Clark.

Really hard to say what is up with the German team. One second they look like they will destroy anyone and the next they can look pretty ordinary. They are young, maybe the inconsistency is reflective of that. We'll certainly find out if they are for real against a tough Argentina team. This should be one of the games of the tournament when they meet.

I really need to quit my job so I can stay home and watch the games today.

I'm slightly afraid because of this inconsistency. it's clearly a psychological thing. confidence and positive expriences for the young players from the U21 team against england let them play really strong.
four years ago they beat argentina but that was "at home"...

I've enjoyed watching Germany, easily one of the best teams in the tournament and I'd vote Bastian Schweinsteiger as the best player in the competition so far. Ozil and Muller have been excellent as well.

As I've mentioned I have money on Argentina to win the competition but I'm worried Germany could put them out. Might come down to who is worse on the day, De Michelis or Neuer - they are the weak links in their respective team.

Ozil is a little weasel but he is a monster around the goal. How goddamned good is david villa?

Can't wait to see Friday and Saturday's early games.

Netherlands-Brazil and Argentina-Germany should be fantastic.

I haven't been that impressed with Netherlands. I'd be very surprised if they beat Brasil. That Argentina-Germany game should be a great match.

what's the thing about cristiano ronaldo? I mean I'm a fan of portugal and everything but that guy... only thing he does is to literally disturb the play of the portuguese team.

I'm really looking forward to the moment where morinho coaches the portuguese team. maybe he kicks his ass in madrid before.

I have conflicting emotions following that match.
I'm glad the Dutch won, even if much of their victory can be attributed to blind luck, but certain actions by Robben and Van Bommel throughout the match soured their victory for me.
The Red card was clearly deserved, but Robben seemed to be flopping quite a bit through out the match without earning any stern warnings or yellow cards.
Martin van Bommel was the dirtiest player on the pitch today and was practically begging for two yellows at the end of the match.
Brazil didn't seem to play with that intensity they normally do once they have an opponent on the ropes. They were especially lack luster leading to the own goal, and then simply fell apart.

Plenty of diving by all of the big stars in this tourney. Mentioned how it sours me in a lot of cases. Robben's wasn't nearly as over the top as many others I've seen. The Brazilians clearly lost their composure in the late going. Go Netherlands.
