Quote:
When I interviewed Ted Leo before the release of The Brutalist Bricks earlier this year, he seemed a bit apprehensive — yet guardedly optimistic — about his future in music. Yes, the thought of retiring from life as a full-time musician was looming, but it wasn’t imminent. However, that seems to have changed in the intervening months.

In a recent interview with Joseph Lord of Louisville’s Velocity (the story is only in print at this point), Leo seems to have pretty much decided that 2010 will be his last of making music as a livelihood. He just doesn’t see it as a sustainable model for himself and the Pharmacists — and drooping record sales (which was also a theme of my chat) is the driving factor in the decision. Per Leo:

People don’t think record sales matter to musicians. If you’re selling less than 10,000 records, it probably doesn’t matter. And if you’re selling more than 100,000 records, it probably doesn’t matter. But if you’re selling somewhere in the middle, it can make a huge difference.

It’s a losing proposition for us at this point. It’s something we can’t keep doing. It’s a simple, unfortunate fact. In our particular case, it is totally tied to a downturn in record sales.

And while some of his talk seemed to hint at part-time rock and roll antics in 2011 and beyond, other statements were much more foreboding and worrisome.

I’m going to be totally honest with you. By next year, there’s no way I’m going to be able to be on tour like I have been these last few years. There’s no way I’m going to be able to keep writing and recording and playing music.

Interesting. I follow Ted Leo on Twitter, so I'm hoping for a response to this. But, based on his output this year he definitely is down on the whole process. I think the idea of touring more and more is beginning to wear thin, and he knows physically and mentally he can't do more dates.

That sucks. I saw him twice this weekend and he seemed happy to be performing. If he is done, I'm glad I got to see him live. He's a great performer.

Yeah, thats kinda been my point too. Good, but not great.

Donovan, what size venue did you see him at?

Friday's show was in a small pub that holds about two hundred people. Saturday's was outdoors in front of a few thousand. Both shows were part of the Sled Island festival.

yeah... i'm like this, too. i saw him something like 10 times between '01 and '05, but have skipped every show he's played near me the last five years. the venues kept getting bigger and the song selection kept getting diluted. i don't doubt he has another one or two excellent records in him, but does he have the desire to make them now?

I don't think I've seen him since 2006, but it was definitely a show that stood out, but I haven't really listened to anything after 'Shake the Sheets'.

Last time I saw him was opening for Pearl Jam, so I was wondering what size shows he was playing now. Seems like he still packs houses.

Ted Leo not "retiring," but will make "some changes" in 2011
by Kyle Ryan July 7, 2010

The ever reasonable Ted Leo just posted a level-headed response to a "classic journalistic hissy-fit" that he's retiring at the end of the year. He's specifically mentioning a post on Buzzgrinder, which quotes an interview where he says the life of a touring indie musician ain't paying the bills anymore.

Although "the energy we have inside us is not as boundless as it once seemed," Leo adds that he isn't planning to stop altogether.

"The important part of what I said in the particular interview that was re-quoted without full context by Buzzgrinder, is that we’re completely booked through the end of 2010, but that yes – by next year, you will see some changes – it simply can’t go on like this forever; followed by “I’M SURE I’LL NEVER STOP MAKING MUSIC,” which is a statement I stand behind, but as I said in Spin a while ago (just to make sure you understand that this doesn’t come completely out of left field), pretty soon, I have to start figuring out what comes next."

What comes next? He's not sure, or he's not saying. Either way, he sounds a bit like Trent Reznor these days—maybe they could collaborate in a new, non-touring band? It'd probably be a whole lot more interesting than that new How To Destroy Angels EP.

By the way, did you see Ted Leo's version of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" in A.V. Undercover?

Figured as much, and in the original post I alluded to the fact that he can't do more touring than what he's doing in 2010. That's also why I was asking what size places he was playing--he seems to be selling out, or packing them in. Not exactly something you retire with.

Good on him for clearing this up.

I think this is the problem Leo is feeling. Brutalist Bricks is a fine album, but he's not the new band on the block any more, so no matter how good it is it'll never be seen as anything other than "just more Ted Leo" (read: meh) by the try-hards.

If by "his best records" you mean Tyranny of Distance I can agree. Otherwise, it's on par or better than the rest - and certainly better than Hearts of Oak (aka the try-hard entry point).

Radcliffe unintentionally nailed it. Outside of Tyranny of Distance, he kinda sucks and even Tyranny of Distance doesn't really stand up to years of repeated listening.

I agree with Rads.

Billy, I disagree with you though--Personally, I think most of his records stand up just fine. Maybe I was into him more, or maybe they hit me differently. Whatever the case, I still listen to most (even the bizrre "tej leo(?), Rx / pharmacists", which was listened to this morning).

I can see the problem this sort of situation points out with bands just not being able to make much of a go at it these days with everyone getting the music for free.

That said, I've always found Ted Leo sort of the ultimate competent but basically boring musician. Everything he does to me sounds OK, solid, well-made yet ultimately characterless. You can play him and it will never bother me but it will never excite me either.

This is where I am, too. "Heart Problems" has probably become my all-time fav Leo tune.

I like him in theory - and he's a fan-fucking-tastic interview - but I'm pretty unmoved by a lot of his music.

"Bridges Squares," however, knocks me over every time.
