This is what 10 year old's seem to listen to nowadays thanks to MySpace, American Idol, and YouTube...

Would you let your kid listen to this?
Will you try and influence his/her music decisions?
Should you just keep them offline and cram vinyl down their throat?
Is it OK for them to wear colored bracelets?

Lot's of issues guys.

right or wrong, hip or not, this is the same as forcing them to go to sunday school

i'll expose my dude to cool stuff and let him go his own way, fleetwood mac style. teach him how to think, and not what to think, and hope he develops the knack to filter the good shit from the bad

10 year olds still listen to all of that, and just like you did back then they think, "why does everyone else in my school listen to such horrible shit."

Whatever kids listen to these days it's still 1000x better than Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Supertramp.

actually, lets take this further.

so Radcliffe, you're saying that if you could have children (not sure), you would rather them listen the artists I posted above than Sabbath, Maiden, Supertramp? serious question.

I only followed the first link, but yes. Definitely. Any child that listens to Sabbath is one of them slow kids, doomed to a feeble life of ovine acquiescence and pretend rebellion. All that, plus TEH DUMB. Maiden and Supertramp is even worse.

Assuming you're semi-serous with this, I don't think that's what 10 year olds listen to honestly. Generally speaking. I mean, I just can't see some 10 year old kid actively seeking out Iron Maiden. I don't have kids and I could be wrong but I just don't see kids that age actively looking for stuff.

I think most kids that age get their music from 2 sources: Mass media (Disney, Top 40, etc) and their parents.

Could I see a kid liking "Money" by Pink Floyd because he heard it on the radio or when his dad was playing it? Of course, but it's most likely something off Disney (Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, etc) or whatever pop artist is on MTV. I mean, just because some kid liked "Ace Of Spades" and listed Motorhead as his fave band doesn't mean he's out there looking for deep cuts or any cuts for that matter.

I mean, for me, when I was 10, in 1984 (egads) my musical taste was probably somewhere between what I heard from my dad (Jimmy Reed, Elvis, Beach Boys, CCR, Oak Ridge Boys, Statler Brothers) and Top 40/MTV (Prince, Springsteen, Huey Lewis, Duran Duran). Maybe throw in some Ray Stevens.

I think it's all subjective but I also think that, even in this new information age, some kid didn't get turned on to Supertramp because he was watching That's So Raven.

not semi-serious, dead serious.

mass media is the real issue imo. they pump out garbage left and right, and kids are exposed to it. i have a real problem with that. solution? i have no idea.

and i think kids at that age definitely do search for stuff they dig. i know i did. my mom would play Elvis, Bob Dylan, and Jim Croce, and I knew i wanted something different. i hated that stuff. when i heard Paranoid for the first time, i knew that was it. i wonder if i would have wanted the same if i was being bombarded with crap (Disney, MTV) constantly.

If I had a kid I'd think he was a schmuck if he listened to all my shit instead of his own...which i would expect not to like.

Who cares what they listen to at 10? I mean--I suppose in the ideal world all anyone would listen to is killer music. But this isn't an ideal world, and we're talking about people who've just barely learned to tie their shoes. It is once they hit the age of 18 that you can hit the panic button if they're still listening to whatever the bland mainstream top40 outlets are shilling.

I have an 11 year old, and don't try to cram anything down his throat, even that he should be into music. He likes some of the mainstream hip hop and pop stuff, and that's okay. By the mere fact that he's around me, he gets exposed to a lot of stuff I like, and I'm guessing 90% of it he doesn't like at this point. He lets me know usually when he does like something and I'll load some on his mp3 player. He does like Iggy Pop (especially "The Passenger"), MIA, and some pop punk stuff I have. It seems pretty random to me, but it's cool.

I do this.
And, some of it they like. But they are now getting to the ages (9 and 11) where they want to discover their own music... not listen to their dad's. So, I don't play as much for them anymore. The older one is into hip-hop and punk.
He's big on telling me who he likes and following it with a, "You would hate them, Dad."
(But he has pretty good taste, in general, so I probably actually like about 70% of what he does.)

The little one likes whatever his brother likes, plus Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach, as well. (Go figure!)

I find it funny that you are complaining about what kids listen to when you are such a big fad follower yourself.

Pot, meet kettle.

I'm just hoping that 2 out of 3 girls aren't cumdumpsters on brazzers.com. Bad taste in music I can handle.
