this had no bearing on the dissolution of my marriage, but not for nothing, my wife always crams shit like black-eyed peas, pink and lady gaga down my kids' throats when they ride in her van, while i try and expose them to the likes of art brut (my youngest son LOVES them) and DBT

this issue goes far beyond music, it's a challenge to handle all the input of media as a kid and learn more and more to ask questions and develop a personality, but when you as parents give some good example how to do that I guess it will turn out all fine.

when I was a 10 yr old, it was all about techno and stuff like "euro dance" and I loved it. then I started to enjoy albums like we can't dance by genesis, especially the long songs, and from queen's innuendo my favorite tune was hitman. I considered that metal and the "heavy" guitars blew me away.

by cramming, do you mean she makes them memorize album names, song titles, lyrics?

what fads are you referring too? i'd love to know. :wanker:

OMG CHILLWAVE

The fact that you can even type something called "chillwave", and (i'm assuming) know what it means, pretty much proves my point.

No. She makes them dress like Gaga.

While I'm typing this post, I'm coincidentally listening to R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction (Deluxe Edition) (thx for posting in TWENYTEN, Dale) an album (along with Document) I heard via my older brother when I was 9 years old. I also remember being young, listening to the radio and calling DJs requesting songs. Music has been a huge part of my life since I was very young. While listening to 80s Top 40 and my parents' oldies/motown/girl groups and loving those songs, I was on a parallel path of discovery of "underground" music led by my brother and his high school buddies with bands like Ramones, Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Replacements, Guadalcanal Diary, Del Fuegos, Hoodoo Gurus, Camper Van Beethovern, et al. When I was 12 I was introduced to Dinosaur Jrr and Descendents by friends I skated with and discovered for myself The Smiths, Sonic Youth and Mudhoney via MTV 120 Minutes. When I was an adolescent/tweenager I listened to mostly angsty hard-rock and metal with a couple of a few-month-long sessions with classic rock like Doors, Led Zep, Pink Floyd and the like.
I'm going through my history as what I'm guessing was an exception to the rule, being a kid from a south Georgia town, population 16,000 to show that sometimes if unintentionally influenced or just given the option by friend, sibling or parental exposure, a kid can find music outside of the mainstream. That being said, I think I was always seeking out something different whether I knew it or not, so that characteristic probably needs to be present in a youth or they will just take what Disney, pop and country radio feeds them (my nieces and nephew are this way).

My boy's favorite song is The New York Dolls version of Seven Day Weekend.

We make up lyrics about him to the tune, and it always calms him down.

He is destined to be awesome.

I feel like I must have been a weird ten year old. As far as I can recall these are all the tapes I owned.

The Beatles- Magical Mystery Tour
Electric Light Orchestra- The best of ELO
Herman's Hermits- The best of
Canned Heat- I think it was another best of
Chumbuwumba- Tub Thumping

I think thats all I owned, and I wore them all out. I also walked around school singing the songs. Other than Chumbuwumba, which was inescapable in 1997, I had no idea what was going on in pop culture. My family didn't get cable and my dad played all his music in the car when ever we drove around. I got a lot of my taste from him, he was/is into stuff like Massive Attack, Tricky, The Stooges, etc. I discovered Nirvana when I was 13, in 2000, and it changed everything. I have always been behind the times in music.

It seems pretty bad, but I think we're just going through another rough patch, like the 80's.

As long as a kid is passionate about something (save maybe video games), i guess just be glad that they're passionate about something that they can call their own. If it's something creative, or a skill they want to hone like playing an instrument, or shooting freethrows... does it really matter?

They need to learn to form opinions and defend them. Kids these days seem crippled by the inability to make choices when they're presented.

But I don't have kids, i just try and teach them how to sing.

When I was ten I think I listened to New Kids on the Block and Billy Joel and I turned out alright. Well, I still like Billy Joel, but...

At 10 I was just coming out a 4 year Beatles / Oldies phase, for some reason - pretty much all I'd listen to was beatles tapes and records and some compilation oldies 50's stuff. Then I started thinking whatever my sister liked was cool, so Def Leppard, Kiss, and Prince. I didn't start buying a decent amount of tapes really until I was like 13.
