Looks like the in-laws are coming next week to visit us in our new WI location. We are planning to spend a 4-day weekend in Chicago from July 23-26. I've already got some ideas of what we want to see and do, but I will take any suggestions from the Chicago experts out there in Obner-Land. Keep in mind that I have four kids (ages 9, 7, 4 & 2), so kid-friendly places will be the most likely stopping points.

Shedd Aquarium - I've been told this is a must-visit
Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum
Museum of Science & Industry - I still remember going as a kid, so this is a must-visit as well
Field Museum
Chicago's Children's Museum
Legoland Discovery Center
Lincoln Park Zoo
Millennium Park

Feel free to add to the list, or comment on what's already on the list. Thanks in advance!!!

From a gastronomic standpoint, I'd suggest the Lard Nar at Penny's Noodle shop. A must everytime I return to Chicago, like this weekend for Pitchfork.

might be cheaper to buy the city pass. You have too many kids.

Also, Penny's is some buster ass thai. You can do way better.

shedd, adler and the field museum are all within a few hundred feet of each other. unless your kids are absolutely obsessed with space, i'm not sure adler would be worthwhile. at least, i wouldn't sacrifice time at shedd or the field for it if you are going to the museum of science & industry too since their space exhibit is pretty good.

I hear someone dissing on my Lard Nar?
I agree there are better Thai places but I'm talking specifically about that crispy fatty delight. So good.

I do have too many kids... I did find some info on the City Pass and was thinking that was the way to go. Thanks for the info so far, everyone. Keep it coming!!!

We did 3 days in Chicago in February and Obner gave me a lot of good advice. We also have 4 kids, and here is what I discovered. I meant to post a response to that thread afterward, but might as well do it here.

We spent almost an entire day at the Field museum, and everyone had a great time. They seem to have a lot of temporary exhibitions, which cost extra. None of them really caught our interest so we only did the permanent exhibits, and even then still didn't see it all. Our feet were aching by the end, but the oldest didn't want to leave.

After the Field, we went to the Adler planetarium, just a short walk away, and caught a couple super planetarium shows. My kids all like science, and we were all ready for some sit-down time by then. We were able to see the museum parts in between shows. I found out later that our Planetarium membership would have gotten us into a lot of other sites at discount... not sure if this is the "city pass" other people mention, but it seems like a good way to save some cash on admissions. Plus the membership benefits are good in other cities - we just saved $40 in Milwaukee because of that Adler membership.

I was pleasantly surprised how much they all liked the Art institute - I'd expected to be dragged out by a bored family after an hour. Instead we spent 3-4 hours there, so much that we missed out on the museum of science & industry planned for that afternoon (next trip!)

The Bean in Millennium park is probably the single site we most talk about - it seems to have stuck in my kids' memory. Of course, it was 8 am and 20 degrees out when we were there, so we basically had the thing to ourselves.

We were very disappointed with the children's museum. The youngest liked it, but the rest of us were ready to leave after a half-hour. Our hometown has a great children's museum, at which my 11 year old daughter volunteers and helps plan events. She in particular expected more from a big city museum.

We missed out on the Shed Aquarium: it was a free day and the line was insane. Easily a 2 hour wait. Since we were planning on hitting Seaworld in Florida the next week, it didn't seem worth it. I'd still like to go there on the next trip.

We went to the Lego place (a typical lego store - if you've been to one, you know what to expect) and also the American Girl place (both girls blew most of their souvenir money here) but otherwise didn't do much shopping. We went up the Hancock at night (almost empty of other tourists) and ate dessert at the Cheesecake factory, located on ground floor.

We stayed downtown, less than a block from a Red line station. I'd assumed that all Chicago transit lines were elevated, but the red line stations are below ground, like London or Manhattan. Made a big difference in February with little kids. Staying downtown may have cost more, but as I'm sure you're aware being close is a huge benefit with little legs and excess baggage.

By dinner time we were usually pretty beat, but had no problem finding great kid-friendly places to eat. One night we had Lou Malnati pizza delivered to the hotel room. (if you do, pack paper plates and plastic forks.) Fantastic - I'm craving it now.

I hope you have a great time, and I look forward to hearing about your trip - The next time we go it will be in the summer, so the zoo and some architectural walking tours are planned. The wife and I look forward to an adult only trip someday too. 8-)

While there is some new stuff downstairs, prepare to be disappointed when you get to the older exhibits (what you probably remember) as when I visited in 2005 it looked like those exhibits hadn't been kept up since 1985.

i think the original post is in reference to the lego discovery center out in the suburbs, not the regular store that's in the nordstrom building.

Thanks for all the details!!!

It now looks like we'll be going on Thursday, Friday & perhaps stay until Saturday...

The List:
Field Museum
Shedd Aquarium
Museum of Science & Industry
Millennium Park
Hancock building (if time)
Lou Malnati's Pizzeria (was already on my list)

Can you elaborate on the kid-friendly restaurants, or do you remember their names?

mutty, good for you taking your kids to the art institute.
i used to take my kids to art museums and galleries to see stuff and an hour was just enough.
i took them to a gallery that was showing claus oldenberg sculptures of giant hamburgers and plates of spaghetti. they loved it.

I see - My kids would have loved that discovery center, if we'd known about it... I guess I'll add that to my list for next time!

Looks like my plans have been changed slightly.

We are now going to arrive in Chicago mid-morning on Thursday. We will spend Friday there as well with the in-laws & kids. Then, the in-laws will be returning to Wisconsin with the kids late on Friday afternoon, leaving me & the wife in Chicago for Friday night and Saturday. My wife & I will then return to Wisconsin sometime late on Saturday.

So, my revised schedule is shaping up like this:

Thursday:
Museum of Science & Industry
Millennium Park (if no rain)
Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

Friday:
Shedd Aquarium
Field Museum
In-laws back to WI with kids
Hancock Observatory

Saturday:
Art Institute of Chicago

The reason I'm planning on Shedd & Field Museum both on the same day is their proximity to each other. Is that going to be too much to do on one day?

Thanks for all the info so far!!

i wouldn't imagine so. the shedd should be first since it probably won't take as much time as the field. it's entirely possible to spend an entire day at the field and still not feel fulfilled.

If you're staying downtown, check out Navy Pier on Friday night -- Fireworks over the lake & free summer concerts - Old 97s played last wkend. The Ferris wheel's fun and they have some other attractions. Oak St. beach in the hot afternoon's a good call. FWIW, MSOI is a bit south and as mentioned earlier, better for older kids. Best Bets: Shedd & Field Museum. Zoo. Red Line to Chinatown always fun too. John Hancock observatory on clear day is easier than Sears Tower. Buy a CityPass! Good Luck.

Newest Plan:

Thursday:
Field Museum
Millennium Park (if no rain)
Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

Friday:
Shedd Aquarium
Museum of Science & Industry (only if we don't spend a lot of time at Shedd... if they are enjoying Shedd a lot, we'll just skip it this time)
In-laws return to WI w/ kids
Hancock observatory (Or) show/musical (need to check scheduling)

Saturday:
Art Institute
Musuem of Contemporary Art (if time, no rush to make it)
Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool
Return to WI

Thanks again to all who've offered suggestions and thoughts!!!
