Saw this yesterday at "family movie day" with femdisco. Decent enough with less teenage soap opera BS that buried New Moon.

It was directed by David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night, Aphex Twin's "Donkey Rhubarb" video). Visually it was brighter than the depressing, darkly-lit New Moon. He knows how to create slow-building suspense and Kristen Stewart actually seemed dynamic under his direction, whereas in every movie I've ever seen her in (including Adventureland) she's seemed one-note and barely able to express any emotion beyond confusion.

saw this sunday afternoon. it was alright, i suppose. i haven't seen any of the duplass brothers movies before but it really didn't make me want to seek them out. i guess movies like stepbrothers and the like have just spoiled me about characters being mean to each other so when something like this comes along and it's focal point is john c. reilly and jonah hill antagonizing each other and it's just not that bad, i feel a little cheated. it was decent though.

hahaha

I watched that Aphex Twin video for the first time in years, thanks to stu's post. I think most of his stuff from his peak period has held up really well, but, man, that song is just obnoxious and really nothing special. Definitely one of his most numbingly repetitive.

Sector 9 - Good movie, and a highly original amalgam of every sci-fi, terrorist related, and non-religion based end of the world yarn of the last 20-30 years. I saw pieces of Alien, Predator, Robocop, Enemy Mine, Contra, 12 Monkeys, 28 Days Later, The Kingdom, The Fly, Independence Day, and those moc/doc movies.

Worst part of the movie. The story could've been told better without the fake doc conceit, plus they just dropped it anyway.

Really, that's what you've gotta do. I loved it, my sister liked it a lot and my mom hated it and thought it was way too long. Everything I've heard about The A-Team is pretty awesome though, all of my friends said it's pretty good fun and entertaining.

I loved Inception as well - maybe not as much as I thought that I might ahead of time, but it was still pretty damned awesome :)

Inception was an outstanding movie.
I think that, 15 years ago or so it would have had a deeper impact, even on an individual level; we've had too many mindfuck movies over that time and it kinda diminishes some of the impact. But it is still extremely well-done and leaves just enough questions unanswered and strings dangling to keep you thinking about just what the hell was going on.
Yet, amazingly enough, it was not really confusing while watching it; I always knew what was going on at the time.

My expectations were super-high, and it nearly reached them. I'll probably see it again soon.

I'm not comparing it to the A-Team specifically, just the specialized gang of characters (architect, leaderguy, forger, etc.) on a mission. I didn't see the A-Team movie.

If you see this, go into it expecting to see a regular ol' summer blockbuster heist movie, and you'll probably like it. I didn't know a whole lot about it, but kept hearing how smart it was, and my expectations probably did the biggest hit job on the movie.

For me, it's too literal, too shallow and too convenient, with a focus on eye candy at the expense of actual compelling characters or narrative. There are some pretty neat looking environments, but I felt they only existed to show you that they had the technology to pull it off, rather than these abilities were integral to the mission or the story. I get that this is science fiction, therefore you add that extra layer of suspended belief, but there were several inconsistencies that came across as sloppy. The Broad didn't like it, but stopped shorter than I did. She agreed that it was way overexplained, and left too little to the imagination.

Best/most original criticism/comment I've heard about Inception:

Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son/director of 'Moon') Wrote:
"Wondering about Inception. In all MY dreams, my teeth are falling out and I discover I have a vagina. None of that in the film. Curious."

I saw a critic who mentioned that there was not one pair of tits to be found in the subconscious of a half-dozen guys.

i liked inception, but agree with the eye candy comment above. also, nolan has all these really interesting ideas, but i get taken out by characters who repeatedly break rules that have been set. but at least it looked amazing and it didn't feel like it was as long as it was. (i left work, walked across the river to the theater and walked out of there at 9pm.)

Too much with the chasing and gun fighting and not enough mindfucking and cool visuals for me. I only saw a couple reviews that were all focused on it being some trippy thing and didn't really show how basically like Fu said, lots of the standard issue summer Hollywood blockbuster elements are the real stars of much of it. Not horrible and I didn't feel ripped off I guess, just nothign special for me.

I like, though, that "typical summer blockbuster" under Nolan's direction (which he's basically become the master of) at least offer a rather mindless, ignorant populace something to think about. It may not be a primer or pi but it is pretty evocative for a 186 million dollar summer blockbuster. The fact that he can do that and appeal to a massive audience says a lot about him as a director IMO.

Since I have bronchitis and haven't been able to go to see Inception, I thought I'd revisit Memento while I was stuck on the couch. After all these years, it really still holds up. I think after multiple viewings, I've learned to suspend belief enough now to not focus on the killer per se, but rather on the atmosphere of the film, which is fantastic. Hopefully, I'll get to see Inception this weekend.

this probably will have limited appeal to most Obners but I saw this while in Chicago for the week and thought it was great.

It's 1947. A young Jewish boy in Jerusalem eager to learn about life befriends an English sergeant during the British occupation of Palestine much to the dismay of his friends and family. Based on the short story by Amos Oz. An Israeli movie in English, in limited release.

Trying to remember what all I've last seen.

Invictus. Watched this with my parents while they were here visiting. A good choice for that type of situation. Decent feel-good flick.

Ninja Assassin. My wife wanted to see this because the lead actor is Korean pop superstar Rain, and I'm generally up for watching any dumb action flick. And this was certainly dumb. Also cartoonishly violent. They did crazy things with blood in this movie, and I have never seen so many legs get chopped off. I suppose it's a little bit of an uphill battle to try make ninjas seem cool and dangerous again after how they've been used in movies from the past thirty years, and this actually kind of succeeded. It cheated a good bit by giving them almost vampire-like abilities - especially the main bad guy - but overall it made for a pretty entertaining movie, for what it is. Rain actually seems like a decent action hero so long as his lines are kept to a minimum, which they were.

A Serious Man. Finally got around to watching this over the last two nights. Being a Coen Bros. flick there's a lot to savor aesthetically, and it has their usual dark wit. It really seemed like an incomplete idea, though, and watching one of the special features ("Becoming Serious", I think) really confirmed this notion. They just sort of had all these things they wanted to put into a movie, and so they did, without worrying too much about it having a plot or ever feeling like it was going anywhere. That's not to say that it wasn't good or that I wouldn't watch it again. I really don't mind this sort of thing as long as I feel like there is sufficient substance contained within, and there definitely is here. Not that there's any real deep meaning to all the events (that's kind of the theme of the movie), but more that the characters and scenarios are thought out with such interesting well-rendered details that it's satisfying just to mull over all of the little things littered throughout.
