Tiring.

One big riff.
One deep cut.

Their first album was a guilty pleasure;
and that was an accumulation of line-walking cliche' shudders that I eventually felt comfortable with after considerable evaluation.

but this album, not all that dissimilar, feels like a repetitive accumulation of forced melodic phrasing for an attempted deep-dish connection.

it reads like a grown-up emo album.

i have to say this for them, they know what their audience wants. last night i saw them and they delivered to that demographic of kids just getting out of spoonfed top 40 who use gaslight anthem and their ilk as a sign that they're rebelling. fun show. and they covered "the war" by lucero.

My sentiments exactly. I felt like with '59 Sound was close to being totally unbearable lyrically but I came to really enjoy the nod to 50's culture and whatever. There was no way they could pull it off twice, though and that's what they try to do with American Slang. There are a couple of songs on the new one that I like ok but it's far from being a good album.

way worse than 59 sound which has worn a bit thin but is still fun overall.
