I really love modern artists takes on other artists songs. Some bands are really prolific with it, while some just have one or two outstanding ones. Post some of your favorites here, with links if possible. I know we've done this before, but it's been awhile and there may be some fresh stuff.

Justin Townes Earle's take on "Can't Hardly Wait" from last year's "Midnight At The Movies" was aces.

Best Coast - "In My Room" (Beach Boys)
Okay, so it's not one of my favorite covers of all-time, but it's something new, and it's by a band that's kinda a buzz band around these parts:

Others, that I like a little more (but may or may not have mentioned before):
The Bollwevils - "Roller Queen" (Naked Raygun)
Harry Nilsson - "Let the Good Times Roll" (?)
The Wolfgang Press - "Mama Told Me Not to Come" (Randy Newman)
Richard Hell - "All the Way" (Frank Sinatra)
Velvet Crush - "Why Not Your Baby" (Gene Clark)
Peter Laughner - "Calvary Cross" (Richard Thompson)
Dwight Yoakam - "I Want You To Want Me" (Cheap Trick)
Def Leppard - "Hanging On the Telephone" (The Nerves/Blondie)

At some point, I'll see if I can get you any of these...

You've seen this series, right: http://www.avclub.com/articles/introduc ... ver,38989/

The Onion's AV Club had a list of songs and invited bands in one by one to cover them. The band gets to choose which song, and then it's removed from the list, so the later a band comes in the fewer songs they can choose from until the last band must cover the last song. There's still a few weeks/bands/songs left to be done (it updates on Tuesdays).

I still love Neko Case's cover of Sarah Vaughn's "Look for Me (I'll be around)".

Oh, and Gary Jules' "Mad World" (Tears for Fears)

That one holds up surprisingly well to the country treatment.
And, the Def Leppard one is surprisingly good, too...

I do enjoy some good covers. My favorite one I've come across for a while was last year's cover of a Beatles song by a local St. Louis band. Here's Sleepy Kitty answering the question of what it would sound like if the Velvet Underground covered my favorite Beatles song:
