I just went to search for something and got the following message:

Through traffic monitoring of our websites we have identified your IP address accessing allmusic.com at a rate and speed inconsistent with the noncommercial and personal use permitted by our site's Terms of Service. As a result, further access to allmusic.com has been denied. Because IP addresses can be shared by numerous users, your access may be being denied based on the aggregate use of your IP address rather than your own individual use. To ensure that this is not the case, simply create your own individual user account by becoming a Registered Member of allmusic. [Click on the “Register” button in the upper right hand corner of the home page.] Once you’ve become a Registered Member and are logged in, you will once again have full access to allmusic, and will continue to have access, as long as your usage remains consistent with our Terms of Service. If you are already a Registered Member of allmusic, simply ensure that you are logged in when you use the site. Thank you.

Anyone else ever seen this?

That's just it, I don't use it that much. Maybe once daily at the very most, to verify track listing or something.

Translation: Our advertisers want to know exactly who you are, since you seem to be more interested in music than the usual visitor.

Allmusic has ads? Between using adblock and a custom hosts file I downloaded from here I rarely see ads on any site.

Send them a note and ask them what "a rate and speed inconsistent with the noncommercial and personal use permitted by our site's Terms of Service" is, exactly. I just browsed the TOS and didn't find any limits on how much you can access the site. I'd bet anything that Max is right, and they want you to register so they can create a profile on you.

i got the same message, but i figured it was a result of modifying my firefox so it makes multiple connections to their page (there was a thread about this awhile ago) i'm going to try changing it back and see if it works...

I have never gotten it, but I thought it might have to do with that, too. Pipelining, I believe it's called.

Not pipelining, just using their webpage. I just tried again and managed to get to their page no problem. I'm tempted not to register to see what happens. I'm moving soon enough, so this IP will be long gone.

Just another reason to say: Fuck AMG.

I visit maybe once every two weeks now. It's garbage. I'll get my information elsewhere.

mp3.com has the same shit, damn near to the letter most times.

Or I can just research each instance individually through any number of AMG-less avenues thanks to Google or Yahoo!, without relying on one specific site.

AMG's major advantage was convenience. Now that it doesn't work for shit or constantly has me clicking or begging me to log in, it has lost 90% of it's convenience.

Just because it is convenient doens't mean it's the only source. Moaning about the lack of information elsewhere is akin to the people I worked with who were appalled that you could type your name into Google and your name and address pop up. "My god! This is awful! Invasion of privacy at someone's fingertips!"

The simple fact of the matter is that I could find the same information with a fucking phone book and some nimble fingers or with a reverse lookup, which we have in the office. Just because it's easy doesn't mean it's the only.

I also don't read Pitchfork, ever.

I take most cues from people here or a few other occasional boards or a handful of intermittent reviews I happen to glance over.

allmusic makes my Firefox crash, so I only get on the site using Internet Explorer. Perhaps trying that in the future?

I got the same message yesterday. So I went to a different webpage, then went right back. Problem solved.

Nice try, allmusic.
